About The Position

The Court Security Officer provides armed security for Beaufort County courthouses and court personnel, and performs related work as assigned. This officer follows guidelines established by the Beaufort County Sheriffs Office, as well as South Carolina Court Administration concerning courtroom security and is under the direct supervision of the Special Operations Branch Courthouse Staff Sergeant. Must perform general law enforcement duties.

Requirements

  • Ability to read and analyze technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and effectively present information and respond to inquiries; to solve practical problems and deal a diverse population with diverse problems.
  • General computer skills.
  • At the time of appointment, must be a registered voter in Beaufort County.
  • Must maintain all training and certification standards as established by the Sheriff's Office and the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.
  • Must possess or obtain within one year of hire a South Carolina Class III Advanced certification.
  • Must have a valid South Carolina driver's license at the time of appointment.
  • Must be fluent in the oral and written communication of the English language.
  • Must be physically able to operate equipment such as firearms, automobile, office equipment, radio, telephone, etc. and meet all of the physical fitness requirements established by the Sheriff's Office.
  • Requires the ability to read and comprehend a variety of books, maps, policies and procedures, equipment manuals, training manuals, etc. and to prepare detailed reports and correspondence using correct punctuation, spelling and grammar.
  • Requires the ability to apply principals of logical thinking to define problems, collect data, established facts and draw valid conclusions; to make independent judgments in the absence of supervision; and to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation.
  • Requires the ability to record and deliver information. Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with diversified persons of varying educational backgrounds.
  • Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.
  • Must be adaptable to performing under stress or when confronted with emergencies or other critical situations.
  • Maintains an acceptable standard of accuracy in exercising duties and responsibilities.
  • Ability to take immediate corrective action for any deficiencies that may occur.

Responsibilities

  • Provide armed security in Beaufort County courthouses and courtrooms.
  • Maintain strict security at court entrances through the use of electronic detection devices.
  • Ensure the safety of court personnel and the general public.
  • Maintain order and silence in courtroom waiting areas.
  • Ensure strict security in courtroom prisoner detention areas.
  • Carry out orders and directions provided by the court and perform all duties in compliance with applicable policies, procedures, laws, regulations and standards of safety.
  • Transport prisoners to and from court in some limited situations, under direction from supervisory personnel.
  • Serve civil process papers in the courtroom as directed.
  • Prepare and submit incident reports, activity reports, court return papers, various logs, etc. as may be applicable to duties.
  • Operate a police vehicle, firearms, restraining devices, surveillance equipment, metal detector, x-ray machine, cameras, etc. and basic equipment.
  • Attend training, meetings, etc. to enhance job knowledge, skills and maintain required certifications.
  • Perform other duties related to this position as assigned by supervisory personnel.
