About The Position

Under limited supervision, this role involves receiving assignments and reviewing claim and policy information to provide background for investigation. The Claims Specialist may determine the extent of the policy’s obligation to the insured depending on the line of business. This position requires contacting, interviewing, and obtaining statements from insureds, claimants, witnesses, physicians, attorneys, and police officers to secure necessary claim information. Depending on the line of business, the role may involve inspecting and appraising damage for property losses or arranging for such appraisal. The Claims Specialist evaluates facts supplied by investigation to determine the extent of liability of the insured and the company’s obligation under the policy contract. Responsibilities include preparing reports on investigation, settlements, denials of claims, and individual evaluations of involved parties. The role involves setting reserves within authority limits and recommending reserve changes to the Team Leader. Progress and status of claims are reviewed with the Team Leader, discussing problems and suggested remedial actions. Unusual or possible undesirable exposures are prepared and submitted to the Team Leader. The Claims Specialist assists the Team Leader in developing methods and improvements for handling claims. The role requires settling claims promptly and equitably, managing litigated files by directing defense counsel to ensure the best possible outcomes, and obtaining releases, proofs of loss, or compensation agreements. The Claims Specialist issues company drafts in payments for claims and informs claimants, insureds/customers, or attorneys of claim denials when applicable.
