About The Position

The Claims Manager - Workers Compensation is responsible for leading and overseeing a defined segment of the Claims organization at UFG. This role ensures the effective, compliant, and customer focused handling of claims while balancing expense management, regulatory adherence, operational efficiency, and talent development. The Claims Manager leads individual contributors, drives performance outcomes, and partners cross functionally to achieve enterprise goals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Risk Management, Finance, Insurance, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 8+ years of progressive claims experience within P&C insurance.
  • 3+ years of people management in a claims environment.
  • Experience leading change initiatives or large‑scale operational improvements.
  • Prior experience managing multiple lines of business or geographically dispersed teams.
  • Strong knowledge of P&C claims handling practices, coverage interpretation, reserving, and litigation management.
  • Demonstrated experience operating in a regulated environment; public company experience preferred.
  • Proficiency in claims management systems and performance metrics.

  • Professional designations such as CPCU, AIC, SCLA, ARM, or similar preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead day-to-day claims operations across assigned lines of business (e.g., Property, Casualty, Auto, Workers’ Compensation, or Specialty).
  • Ensure consistent, timely, and accurate claim handling aligned with company standards, regulatory requirements, and service level agreements.
  • Monitor claim inventory, cycle times, severity, leakage, and reserve adequacy; proactively address trends and performance gaps.
  • Ensure adherence to internal controls and audit standards requirements.
  • Directly lead a team of Claims professionals.
  • Recruit, onboard, coach, and develop high performing claims staff with a focus on technical skill and succession planning.
  • Establish clear performance expectations and conduct regular coaching, performance reviews, and corrective action as needed.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, inclusion, continuous learning, and ethical decision-making.
  • Partner with Claims Leadership, Actuarial, Finance, and Legal to manage indemnity and expense outcomes.
  • Oversee reserving practices and escalation protocols for complex, litigated, or high exposure claims.
  • Drive initiatives to improve loss outcomes, expense management, and fraud while maintaining fair claim outcomes.
  • Participate in budget planning and expense management for the claims function.
  • Champion a customer centric claims experience while balancing business and compliance requirements.
  • Collaborate with Underwriting, Legal, Compliance, Product, IT, Reinsurance, and Vendor Management teams.
  • Serve as an escalation point for complex or sensitive claim matters, including regulatory inquiries and complaints.
  • Serve as liaison and point of contact with largest UFG clients.
  • Build strong relationships with defense counsel, independent adjusters, TPAs, medical providers, and other external partners.
  • Execute enterprise and claims specific initiatives, including process improvement, technology adoption, and operational transformation.
  • Ensure compliance with state and federal insurance regulations across assigned jurisdictions.
  • Support internal and external claim file reviews/audits, regulatory exams, and market conduct reviews.
  • Analyze data and reporting to inform decision-making and improve operational outcomes.
