About The Position

Umialik Insurance Company, a member of the Western National Insurance Group, is seeking a Claims Intern to join their Claims department as part of the Summer 2027 Internship Program. This role offers the opportunity to assist the Claims team with a wide range of projects related to data collection, entry, and claims resolutions. The internship program is designed to provide practical, hands-on experience, professional development, relationship building, and community involvement. The intern will learn about claims handling processes, including researching coverage, documenting claims, investigating claims, assessing compensability, reviewing bills, setting reserves, and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders. The position also involves attending off-site claims-related tasks and events, shadowing other positions, and assisting with assigned projects.

Requirements

  • Completed two years of college preferred.
  • Willingness to help with variety of tasks from data collection, entry, customer relations, claims resolution and everything in between.
  • Proven time management skills with the ability to effectively prioritize, multi-task, and establish/meet deadlines.
  • Superior customer service.
  • Professional communication skills.
  • An understanding of technology solutions.
  • Ability to work onsite at our corporate office in Anchorage, AK.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Claims team with a wide range of projects related to data collection, entry, and claims resolutions.
  • Learn how to research and confirm coverage for all types of property and casualty claims.
  • Learn the importance of claim documentation and data reporting.
  • Learn how to properly investigate a claim using communication and listening skills, witness information, online research tools, medical records, and/or vendor services.
  • Learn how to use your investigation to assess compensability.
  • Learn to read, review, and pay estimates, medical bills, and vendor bills.
  • Learn how to set and modify reserves on a claim.
  • Learn the importance of working closely with underwriters, loss control, insureds, and agents to offer superior customer service.
  • Attend off site claims-related tasks and events (i.e., inspections, depositions, court appearances, and/or mediations) with adjusting team.
  • Shadow other positions within the company to learn more about careers within the insurance industry.
  • Assist with various projects as assigned.

Benefits

  • The base pay offered for this position will be $21.00/hour.
