About The Position

Mesa Fire and Medical Department (MFMD) is seeking Civilian Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) to respond to medical incidents and provide Basic Life Support (BLS) and medical transportation services to patients. This role involves operating and driving transportation units, providing patient care, utilizing electronic reporting software and radios, interacting with patients, monitoring medical equipment, performing CPR, completing documentation, managing medical supplies, and participating in department activities. Civilian EMTs are assigned to EMS and do not engage in fire suppression. They report to the Emergency Transportation Administrator and receive functional supervision from a Civilian Paramedic on medical scenes. Medical direction is provided by a senior Paramedic, the Department’s contracted Medical Director, or the receiving hospital. This position is FLSA nonexempt and participates in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS).

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Must possess a valid Class D Arizona Driver's License by hire or promotion date and have an acceptable driving record.
  • State of Arizona Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification will be required before confirmation of conditional offers and must be kept current thereafter.
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification required by application date. You MUST list your CPR certification information on your application (issue date, certification number, and expiration date).
  • Must maintain all required certifications throughout employment and complete all required continuing education hours.
  • Must not be on the Office of Inspector General (OIG) List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE).
  • Must successfully pass the ETS Integration Program.
  • Must pass the MFMD Emergency Vehicle Driver/Operator Training by the completion of the ETS Integration Program.
  • Due to the safety and/or security sensitive nature of this classification, individuals shall be subject to pre-employment or pre-placement alcohol, drug and/or controlled substance testing as outlined in City policy and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to medical incidents and provide Basic Life Support (BLS) and medical transportation services to patients.
  • Operate and navigate/drive transportation units.
  • Provide basic Emergency Medical Services (EMS) patient care.
  • Use mobile computers, electronic patient care reporting (ePCR) software, and mobile radios.
  • Interact with patients and take their vital signs.
  • Set up and monitor medical equipment including cardiac monitors and intravenous solutions (IVs).
  • Communicate findings/alerts to the Paramedics.
  • Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
  • Complete patient care reporting and transportation documentation.
  • Inventory, request, and stock EMS medical supplies and equipment.
  • Participate in EMS related programs and training, as well as other department activities.
  • Perform related duties as required.
