This role involves supervision and technical direction over a team of designers, functioning as a lead designer. The primary responsibility is the total delivery of civil/structural deliverables and services, ensuring they are on time, within budget, and meet quality expectations. Duties may include performing advanced design work as a technical specialist for complex assignments. This position requires extensive progressive experience in civil/structural design and the use of project controls for cost, schedule, and quality. Work is performed under general supervision. The role requires familiarity with department design and drafting standards, recognizing and communicating project scope, specifications, and design criteria. It involves reviewing and comprehending the latest information before initiating design efforts, drafting civil/structural plans with minimal supervision, and understanding basic civil material specifications to ensure all necessary information is reflected on drawings. The role also includes recognizing and communicating scope and design changes promptly, performing field-related work such as collecting design information, verifying designs for tie-ins, function, and clearances, providing on-site assistance during startup, performing field support activities during construction, and assisting engineers with cost and material estimates and preliminary design studies. Checking the accuracy and quality of drawings developed by drafters, providing technical guidance to less experienced personnel, coordinating and delegating work activities with teammates and discipline leads, and producing civil/structural construction scopes with engineering review and approval are also key responsibilities. The role involves serving as a mentor for entry-level and new teammates, completing complex designs and layouts for complete systems and components, and handling assignments that may lack clear precedents, requiring problem anticipation and solution provision. Performing front-end layout and design of complex systems and equipment, ensuring compliance with specifications, tolerances, safety considerations, and client requirements, and performing specialized geometric design computations and analysis are also part of the role. Interdisciplinary checks, coordination of data for compatible designs, assisting in establishing or revising guidelines and standards, and reviewing supplier data and drawings are also expected. Checking orthographic (2D) and isometric (3D) drawings prepared by others, potentially directing a team of checking personnel to ensure dimensional accuracy, and collaborating with engineers and other disciplines for design quality are crucial. Providing training to less experienced designers and serving as Lead Designer on projects, ensuring compliance with industry codes, project, and company standards, are also key functions. Preparing man-hour estimates, being responsible for the quality and economy of deliverables, and the efficiency of detailing are important. As a lead designer, ensuring the design team meets scope, schedule, and budget is a primary responsibility.
