About The Position

Mesa Associates, Inc. is a woman/minority-owned full-service engineering, procurement, and project management firm covering power, defense, aerospace, industrial, commercial, and municipal entities. We specialize in power generation and delivery services. Our Nuclear Services Division specializes in providing high-quality engineering, procurement, design, and project management for operating and new reactor clients, and partners with our other divisions to integrate nuclear design with electrical high-voltage, substations, switchyard, transmission line, and distribution design. We have been in the top 10 of EC&M's Top 40 Electrical Design Firms since 2012. With over 1,000 associates, we are big enough to perform, but small enough to care! Mesa Associates is seeking a Civil/Structural Engineer to join our nuclear services team and contribute to the design, analysis, and construction of nuclear facilities. This is an opportunity to play a critical role in the engineering and design processes for commercial nuclear power generation. Mesa's strategic growth strategy for our commercial nuclear division is to create a ready service pool of available staff to support proposals and projects in nuclear generation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited university (required)
  • Ability to obtain PE License within one year of employment (required)
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in design (required)
  • Experience with Industry Standard Design Procedure IP-ENG-001 (required)
  • Strong knowledge of civil design codes (AISC, ASTM, ACI)
  • Proficient computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite)
  • Ability to interpret codes, regulations, and standard practices
  • Must be proficient in identifying, troubleshooting, and resolving issues within a nuclear power plant environment
  • Have effective oral and written communication skills (including technical writing)
  • Possess excellent communication skills and ability to interface with customers and internal team members under a matrixed organization
  • Ability to travel to plant sites when needed (approx. 6-8 days/month with ability to support longer durations)
  • Ability to obtain unescorted access at an operating or construction nuclear plant (required)

Nice To Haves

  • Structural engineering emphasis (highly preferred)
  • Master of Science or other advanced degree in engineering (preferred)
  • PE registration (highly preferred)
  • 2 years’ experience in design of modifications in nuclear (DOE or commercial) plants (preferred)
  • Experience working with multiple operating nuclear clients and vendors (preferred)
  • On-site and past unescorted access (highly preferred)
  • Additional software skills including Bluebeam, AutoCAD, Vault, Risa, ANSYS (preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Prepare scoping documents and proposals to determine extent of modifications required, preparing cost estimates for engineering/design activities for Civil
  • Report to an assigned engineering supervisor on multi-discipline proposals and projects and act as a Responsible Engineer for Civil projects when required
  • Conduct field walkdowns to determine existing configuration of plant structures, systems, and components
  • Perform a broad range of Civil design activities to support development of design change documentation
  • Be responsible for working with other engineers and designers to prepare design change packages for modifications at operating nuclear plants and other associated nuclear facilities
  • Be proficient in preparation of engineering change packages (EC’s), Engineering calculations, reports, review and check structural drawings
  • Follow a strict adherence to civil codes and standards
