About The Position

As a Civil Roadway Design Intern at KPFF, you will work alongside experienced engineers and technical staff on transportation infrastructure projects. You will gain hands-on experience with roadway design, plan development, engineering calculations, and construction support while learning how design decisions respond to agency standards, site conditions, constructability, and the needs of the traveling public. Throughout the internship, you will assist with roadway design tasks involving horizontal and vertical alignments, roadway geometry, grading, drainage, and related civil improvements. You will help prepare plans, profiles, cross sections, details, quantity calculations, and cost estimates under the guidance of experienced engineers. You will support development and organization of design files and technical deliverables using civil design and computer-aided drafting software. You will learn to apply agency design criteria, standards, and project requirements to real-world transportation projects. You will coordinate with drainage, utility, structures, traffic, survey, environmental, and other project disciplines. You will contribute to team discussions, quality-control reviews, and collaborative problem-solving. You will participate in our Weekly Intern Training Series and other mentoring opportunities.

Requirements

  • Current enrollment in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program in Civil Engineering or a closely related field.
  • Basic understanding of civil engineering fundamentals and an interest in roadway or transportation design.
  • Ability to interpret basic survey information, plans, and technical documentation.
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 in undergraduate coursework.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong technical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities, with the ability to work collaboratively.

Nice To Haves

  • Completed or enrolled in coursework related to transportation engineering, surveying, hydrology, hydraulics, or civil design.
  • Familiarity with Civil 3D, MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer, AutoCAD, or comparable design software.
  • Previous internship, research, design-team, or field experience related to civil or transportation engineering, including experience with civil design and computer-aided drafting software is preferred
  • Interest in pursuing a career in civil and transportation engineering.
