About The Position

Hill International is seeking a Civil Inspector in Oakland, California. This role involves inspecting each stage of construction up to completion, interpreting plans, specifications, and codes to verify contract work is performed in accordance with all applicable governing codes and regulations. The inspector will also monitor construction sites for safety violations, prepare Non-Conformance Reports when work is not performed to approved standards, and maintain daily activity logs and reports with photographs. Additionally, the position requires reviewing or preparing interim progress reports for contractor payments, monitoring contractor-testing activities, and preparing reports on labor, material, and equipment on site. The inspector will determine if construction conforms to plans and specifications, conduct quality surveillance, and assist in maintaining a safe work environment while complying with safety rules and procedures. This includes providing Construction Safety and Security field services, coordinating the preparation of inspection survey reports, cost estimates, and maintenance records, and ensuring timely submittals of these reports and records.

Requirements

5+ years of project experience in highway/roadway/utility/transit/bridge and/or rail construction.
Able to obtain Cal-OSHA/OSHA 30-hour training certification.
Strong understanding of construction methods, standards, equipment, quality and safety per State and Federal requirements.
Strong computing skills including competency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Microsoft Excel, Word and SharePoint.
Experience using mobile devices, such as iPads, for reporting preferred.
Ability to interpret plans, specifications, special provisions, and other contract documents.
Ability to independently identify potential problems and propose solutions.
Sufficient communication skills both written and oral.

Nice To Haves

Bachelors in Civil Engineering or Construction Management preferred.
Experience using mobile devices, such as iPads, for reporting preferred.

Responsibilities

Maintains daily activity logs and reports with photographs, in a manner agreed prior to the work.
Review or prepare interim progress reports for contractor payments.
Monitors contractor-testing activities.
Prepares reports on labor, material, and equipment on site.
Determines construction conforms to plans and specifications.
Conducts quality surveillance of specific quality related activities as necessary.
Assists in maintaining, supporting, and promoting a safe work environment while complying with Caltrans safety rules, policies, and procedures.
Provides Construction Safety and Security field services, as directed, including but not limited to Site Safety and Security Reviews including for Construction Equipment, Personnel, Work Procedures and Traffic Control.
Coordinates preparation of inspection survey reports, cost estimates and maintenance records.
Timely submittals of these reports and records.
