About The Position

The Civil Engineering Intern will support ATCS’s Civil Engineering team in its Newport News, Virginia office as part of the 2027 Summer Internship Program, which runs from May or June through August 2027. The intern will gain hands-on experience contributing to real projects and will work alongside engineers and other professionals, primarily on site/civil and land development projects, with opportunities to gain exposure to transportation design projects. The role provides opportunities to develop technical skills and learn how civil engineering projects progress from planning and design through completion.

Requirements

• Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
• Interest in land development, site/civil design, and/or transportation engineering.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs.

Nice To Haves

• Previous coursework related to civil engineering design.
• Previous internship or related experience.
• Exposure to AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroStation, or other engineering/design software.

Responsibilities

• Support engineers with site/civil and land development design projects.
• Assist with preparing site plans, grading, drainage, utility, and other civil design plans.
• Support transportation and roadway design projects as opportunities arise.
• Assist with engineering calculations, data collection, and technical documentation.
• Use engineering and design software to prepare plans, drawings, and other project deliverables.
• Support preparation of reports, exhibits, and other project documentation.
• Collaborate with engineers and other team members to complete project tasks.
• Participate in project meetings and gain exposure to the day-to-day work of a civil engineering team.
• Assist with other technical and administrative tasks as needed.
