About The Position

Michael Baker International is seeking highly motivated and enthusiastic Civil Engineering Interns to join their team for the Spring/Summer 2027 Internship Program in their New York, NY; Newark, NJ; or Pennington, NJ offices. This is an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience working alongside industry-leading engineers, planners, architects, and construction professionals on impactful transportation and infrastructure projects throughout New Jersey and New York. Internship opportunities are available in Highway Design, Bridge Design, Geotechnical Engineering, Traffic Engineering & Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), Construction Services, and Electrical Engineering. At Michael Baker, interns are treated as valuable members of the team and are given meaningful project responsibilities that contribute to real-world solutions. Interns will collaborate with experienced professionals, develop technical and professional skills, and gain exposure to projects that improve mobility, safety, and quality of life for the communities served. The internship program offers a comprehensive professional development experience, including welcome and networking events, mentorship, opportunities to explore multiple engineering disciplines, senior leadership meet-and-greet sessions, field visits and project tours, mock interviews and resume coaching, professional development workshops, final intern presentations, and end-of-program recognition and celebration. While the primary focus is recruiting for the Spring/Summer 2027 internship class, qualified candidates may also be considered for immediate part-time opportunities based on experience and availability. Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum of one year of completed engineering coursework
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Strong written, verbal, organizational, and analytical skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment
  • Passion for transportation infrastructure and engineering excellence

Nice To Haves

  • Coursework in Highway Design, Transportation Engineering, Structural Engineering, Construction Management, Geotechnical Engineering, or related disciplines
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, MicroStation, or other engineering design software
  • Experience with OpenRoads Designer is a plus
  • Prior internship, co-op, or relevant project experience is a plus
  • Strong presentation and technical documentation skills

Responsibilities

  • Assisting with engineering analyses, calculations, and technical documentation
  • Supporting the preparation of drawings, plans, exhibits, and visual presentation materials
  • Contributing to CAD and design production activities
  • Collecting, organizing, verifying, and analyzing project data
  • Assisting with project coordination, field activities, and construction-related tasks, as applicable
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to develop innovative engineering solutions
  • Performing assignments under the guidance of experienced engineering professionals
