Civil Engineering Designer

Core States Group•Somerville, NJ
•$30 - $43•Hybrid

About The Position

Core States Group is seeking a Civil Engineering Designer to support its Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) team, primarily on Distributed Generation projects. These projects include solar, battery energy storage systems (BESS), microgrids, onsite generation, and related energy infrastructure at existing and new sites. Under the direction of civil engineers and project managers, the designer develops civil drawings and supporting documents from initial site evaluation through permitting and construction. Work focuses on site layout, grading and drainage, stormwater management, access roads, erosion and sediment control, utility coordination, and site restoration. This is a hands-on civil design and CAD production role involving collaboration with electrical and structural designers, permitting staff, and construction teams to produce practical, coordinated solutions that account for site conditions, equipment requirements, budgets, and construction constraints. The position is hourly, with a stated range of $30.28–$42.70 and eligibility for overtime in accordance with applicable laws. The approximate annualized compensation range is $62,300–$88,816. It is hybrid, with 1–2 days per week in the office, and is based out of the Somerville, New Jersey; Tampa, Florida; or Ontario, California offices.

Requirements

  • At least 2 years of experience in civil site-development design.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering preferred, or equivalent relevant work experience.
  • Working proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D for site-development drawing production, including surfaces, grading, profiles, and sheet preparation.
  • Familiarity with site layout, grading and drainage, access roads, utilities, erosion and sediment control, and civil construction details.
  • Ability to interpret surveys and engineering markups, incorporate review comments, and identify coordination questions.
  • Strong attention to detail and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, manage assigned tasks, and communicate progress and constraints promptly.
  • Willingness to use company-approved AI tools to improve efficiency while verifying outputs, protecting confidential information, and remaining responsible for work quality.

Nice To Haves

  • Civil design experience for solar, battery energy storage, microgrids, generation facilities, or comparable industrial and utility-intensive sites.
  • Experience with grading, earthwork, drainage, stormwater management, and erosion and sediment control design.
  • Experience with equipment-site layouts, access roads, and construction or maintenance access within constrained sites.
  • Experience coordinating with electrical and structural designers, utility providers, permitting agencies, or construction teams.
  • Experience supporting multiple projects or phased deliverables in an EPC or design-build environment.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and revise civil construction drawings in AutoCAD Civil 3D, including demolition, site layout, grading and drainage, erosion and sediment control, access roads, utility coordination, and construction details.
  • Review surveys, geotechnical information, utility records, site photographs, and existing drawings to establish drawing backgrounds and identify missing information and potential conflicts for engineering review.
  • Develop layouts for equipment areas, access drives, fencing and gates, and site improvements under project engineers’ direction, considering construction delivery, maintenance, and emergency access requirements.
  • Prepare grading plans, surfaces, profiles, and earthwork quantities addressing equipment-pad elevations, drainage paths, grading transitions, and access-road tie-ins.
  • Support stormwater calculations and development of drainage features, erosion and sediment control plans, reports, and permit documents under engineering direction and within project scope.
  • Coordinate civil design with electrical and structural requirements, including equipment footprints and clearances, foundation interfaces, trench and duct-bank routes, utility crossings, and restoration; identify conflicts for resolution by the responsible discipline.
  • Research applicable jurisdictional requirements and client standards, and document site constraints such as setbacks, easements, floodplain information, and accessibility requirements for engineering review.
  • Assist with permit documents and responses to authorities having jurisdiction, utilities, and client review comments.
  • Prepare civil quantity takeoffs and assist with cost estimates and scope documentation supporting EPC planning, procurement, and construction.
  • Incorporate engineering markups, perform drawing self-checks, and participate in interdisciplinary QA/QC reviews.
  • Support construction through directed RFI responses, field-change drawings, and record-drawing updates based on provided documentation.
  • Coordinate assigned work across multiple projects, communicate missing inputs and schedule concerns, and maintain organized drawing files and revision records.
