About The Position

This Civil Engineering Co-op position offers students the opportunity to apply classroom knowledge to real-world challenges within the dynamic and engaging environment of LG&E and KU. As part of the engineering workforce, co-ops will gain hands-on experience in various disciplines requiring analytical thinking, problem-solving, and innovation. The program emphasizes a collaborative culture and a strong commitment to serving communities, with employees united by the purpose of delivering safe, reliable energy. Openings are available in Fleet Engineering, Gas Transmission Integrity & Compliance, Project Engineering, Transmission Investment Planning, and Trimble County Generating Station - Power Plant Operations.

Requirements

  • Available full time during the Spring 2027 semester (January - May)
  • Pursuing an ABET Accredited Bachelor’s degree with declared major in Civil Engineering
  • Minimum 2.50 GPA

  • Applying analytical skills to investigate root cause failures and recommend corrective actions (Power Plant Operations).
  • Working with experienced engineers on projects that will improve system reliability (Power Plant Operations).
  • Working with experienced engineers on engineering design solutions that directly impact plant performance and safety (Power Plant Operations).

Responsibilities

  • Identifying opportunities for process improvement and recommending solutions.
  • Collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data using established engineering procedures.
  • Performing routine engineering tasks such as calculations, testing, and analysis.
  • Supporting operations and maintenance teams with troubleshooting and technical evaluations.
  • Assisting engineers with large-scale projects and initiatives.
  • Participating in the development of engineering goals, budgets, and procedures.
  • Promoting a safe and environmentally responsible workplace.
  • Reviewing assignments for efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by management.
  • Analyzing problems and presenting engineering-based solutions to both plant and engineering teams (Fleet Engineering).
  • Conducting quality assurance reviews of construction records and compiling engineering data in GIS (Gas Transmission Integrity & Compliance).
  • Gathering technical data, coordinating with vendors, and tracking project milestones (Project Engineering).
  • Analyzing and organizing data, focusing on asset nameplate information and asset health data (Transmission Investment Planning).
