About The Position

Eversource is seeking a Civil Engineer to join their Substation Civil Engineering & Design Team. This role involves working with complex systems and equipment, providing engineering and technical services to support the organization's growth. The position offers a hybrid schedule, allowing for work in both the office and the field on various projects. Key areas of expertise include designing new substations and infrastructure, analyzing systems and service disruptions, working with transformers, engineering electrical protection and control circuits, and handling acceptance testing, equipment failures, and system disturbance analysis. The Engineer will be responsible for the development, expansion, and design of the system and its equipment to meet organizational objectives. This includes civil, structural, and site development designs and calculations for electrical substations, ensuring high-quality standards for safe, reliable, competitively priced, and environmentally sound electric service. The role shares accountability with peers in the long-term planning of the transmission/distribution system and is based in Berlin, CT.

Requirements

  • Demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Software proficiency: RISA (3D, Foundation, Connection) and MathCAD.
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an EAC/ABET‑accredited program (required).
  • 3-5 years of civil/structural experience (required), preferably in the electrical utility industry.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.
  • All applicants must be able to work up to five days in the office if needed (for example: emergencies, training, or other business needs) or should the policy change.

Nice To Haves

  • Additional beneficial software experience: AutoCAD, STAAD Pro, L‑Pile, PLS Tower, TNX Tower, Retain Pro, and HydroCAD.
  • Hold a Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) license (preferred)
  • Possession of a Professional Engineering (PE) license (preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Design and analysis of substation site infrastructure for high‑voltage electrical facilities, including structural steel, foundations, rigid bus systems, site grading, stormwater management, oil containment, and substation sanitary and water services, with emphasis on structural steel, foundations, and rigid bus design.
  • Assist in the development and approval of project scopes, specifications, engineering designs, details, material ordering, and cost estimates.
  • Adhere to project schedules, including detailed planning of successive construction phases to effectively implement designs while accounting for outage durations and maintaining realistic timelines.
  • Coordinate with Substation Engineering and Design to communicate project details and ensure all system additions, removals, and modifications are properly designed for safe operation and maintenance.
  • Communicate effectively, demonstrate strong computer proficiency, and produce clear, concise written documentation.
  • Perform root‑cause analysis and support the development and implementation of corrective actions.
  • Review engineering vendor submittments and participate in vendor meetings to address comments and questions throughout the design and review cycle.
  • Review all construction drawings and design documentation prior to issuance to construction contractors.
  • Ensure all work complies with Eversource standards and applicable Codes.
  • Verify the accurate design and specification of additions, modifications, and replacements to transmission and distribution systems in accordance with project schedules.
  • Provide Civil Engineering support during construction, including resolving field questions and approving field‑generated changes to issued designs.
  • Must be available to work emergency restoration assignment as required.
  • Must be available to travel between MA/CT/NH as necessary.
  • Responding to emergency situations to meet customers’ needs is part of every employee’s role. If employed, you will be given an Emergency Restoration assignment. This means you may be called to assist during an emergency outside of your normal responsibilities, work hours and location.
