About The Position

Houston Engineering Inc. (HEI) is hiring a Civil Engineer Intern in Iowa City, Iowa. The intern will work in the field on outdoor construction-phase activities and assist engineers with a variety of in-office projects. The internship is personalized to the intern’s area of interest and may include learning roadway design, geometric layout, drainage analysis, and erosion control.

Requirements

• Be enrolled in a Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering, Bioproducts and Biosystem Engineering, or related engineering program.
• Be able to work extended periods outdoors.
• Have above-average math and communication skills.
• Have a valid driver’s license and be available for overnight travel.

Nice To Haves

• Completed coursework in general surveying and AutoCAD.

Responsibilities

• Assist with plan specifications and estimates and document construction activities.
• Assist with AutoCAD Civil 3D drawings and update redlines on project drawing sets.
• Operate electronic survey instruments, including GPS and Total Station.
• Perform work using software such as AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation, and ArcGIS.
• Observe and collect data at different types of project sites.
• Assist with project research, development, and design.
