About The Position

The New York City Department of Transportation, Division of Bridges is responsible for managing the full life cycle of over 800 bridges and tunnels and over 600 retaining walls, ensuring safety of the public and ensuring mobility for all users. Team members may work on major project designs, oversee construction, oversee maintenance activities, perform engineering reviews and quality assurance tasks on some of the most iconic and complex projects in the City. This role serves as Geometric Design Engineer of the In-House Design CADD/Highway Engineering section in the Bureau of Engineering Review & Support. Performs difficult and technically complex work in the field of Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) related to geometric design. Assists Engineer-In-Charge on projects of technical complexity which have a significant impact on NYCDOT engineering operations and city infrastructure. Performs complex work in the fields of street and highway engineering related to bridge design projects. Prepares geometric standards for bridges and approaches in accordance with NYSDOT and FHWA standards. Prepares design of drainage systems and pavement in accordance with NYCDOT/NYSDOT/FHWA standards. Advises and trains subordinate personnel in engineering responsibilities. Performs other related duties.

Requirements

  • Serving permanently in the title within DOT, or be reachable on DOT's promotional list.
  • Four (4) years of full-time, satisfactory experience in civil engineering work.
  • A valid New York State Professional Engineer’s License.
  • Current New York State registration as a Professional Engineer must be maintained for the duration of your employment.
  • Recent experience in CAD drafting, highway-related design, and the preparation of contract bid documents for bridge rehabilitation projects is required.
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel.
  • NYS driver's license.

Nice To Haves

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • A strong background in geometric design.
  • Proficiency in Civil 3D software for highway and street design.
  • A masters degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university may be substituted for one year of the civil engineering experience required.
  • At least one year within the last three years of experience as a major contributor or a project leader on a complex project requiring additional and specific expertise in the disciplines needed to design or construct the project (for Assignment Levels II and III).
