Civil / Electrical Estimator
About The Position
At Studebaker Electric, Inc., we specialize in public infrastructure and heavy civil electrical work, including airfield lighting, roadway lighting & signals, and underground utilities. We’re looking for an estimator who understands how projects are built and can develop accurate, competitive bids from start to finish. Requirements
- 2 years minimum experience as an estimator in electrical, heavy civil, or underground utilities
- Strong preference for candidates from infrastructure / public works / utility contractors
- Experience with HeavyBid is preferred
- Proficient in Bluebeam
- Solid understanding of: Underground construction (conduit, pull boxes, foundations, trenching)
- Solid understanding of: Subcontractor scopes and procurement
- Solid understanding of: Material takeoffs and pricing
- Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications independently
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Organized and able to follow structured estimating systems
- Effective communicator who can escalate questions appropriately
- Strong computer skills and overall technical proficiency
Responsibilities
- Own bids start to finish
- Review plans, specs, and addenda to fully understand project scope
- Produce complete takeoffs in a clean, consistent, organized format (per company standards)
- Develop accurate estimates in HeavyBid from start to finish
- Identify scope gaps, conflicts, and risks; ask the right questions early
- Proactively engage with General Contractors to clarify scope, resolve ambiguities, and ensure proper coordination of our work within the overall project
- Solicit and level subcontractor quotes
- Procure and analyze material pricing
- Evaluate multiple means & methods to build the job most efficiently
- Incorporate local conditions (labor rates, night work, access constraints, etc.)
- Prepare and submit bids on time
- Continuously improve estimate quality, organization, and processes
