About The Position

Help shape the future of Flagstaff’s infrastructure and community by bringing your surveying expertise to the City of Flagstaff as the City Surveyor. This role provides technical leadership in managing the City’s survey monumentation and records while reviewing plats, easements, legal descriptions, development plans, and other critical survey documents. You’ll combine field expertise, technical knowledge, and attention to detail to support capital improvement projects, right-of-way needs, property acquisition, and responsible community development. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Land Surveying, Civil Engineering, Geomatics, or a closely related field
  • Five (5) years of full-time professional surveying, field engineering, or closely related experience
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Registered Land Surveyor (RLS) in the State of Arizona, or ability to obtain Arizona registration within six (6) months
  • Must possess, or obtain upon employment, a valid Arizona driver’s license

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with GPS/GNSS equipment, robotic total stations, AutoCAD Civil 3D, GIS software, and survey data processing tools
  • Municipal surveying experience including boundary resolution, subdivision review, and legal description preparation

Responsibilities

  • Provides excellent customer service to internal and external customers
  • Attends meetings and performs related duties as required
  • Participates in public involvement on project related issues
  • Plans, coordinates, reviews and performs boundary, topographic, ALTA/NSPS, construction, and right-of-way surveys.
  • Establishes, maintains, and manages survey control monuments, benchmarks, and horizontal and vertical control networks
  • Prepares, reviews, evaluates, and seals legal descriptions, easements, plats, and other survey documents
  • Reviews private development plans, subdivision plats, and survey submittals to ensure survey, dedication, easement and associated documents and work product are accurate and in compliance with city codes and state statutes
  • Conducts field reconnaissance, gathers survey data, performs computations, and completes survey adjustments
  • Reviews and verifies field notes, calculations, GIS updates, AutoCAD drawings, and related survey materials for quality assurance
  • Maintains accurate and complete public records including maps, plats, deeds, and survey files
  • Provides technical support for CIP project design, right-of-way research, property acquisition, and infrastructure planning
  • Coordinates with city departments, outside agencies, private surveyors, developers, and consultants
  • Maintains and calibrates city survey equipment including GPS units, robotic total stations, and automatic levels
  • Supports GIS data collection and integration for real property and infrastructure databases
  • Safely operates a city vehicle in the performance of business-related activities and assigned duties
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
