About The Position

The Prince George’s County Memorial Library System (PGCMLS) is seeking an energetic, customer focused Circulation Assistant to join the team at the Oxon Hill Branch Library. This position offers hands-on experience and the opportunity to support a welcoming community space. Fluency in both English and Spanish is required. To be eligible for additional hourly compensation, bilingual candidates must successfully complete a three-part Spanish assessment covering oral, listening, and reading skills. Once hired, bilingual staff will assist with interpretation and translation as needed. The work schedule includes a mix of daytime, evening, and weekend hours. Employees are expected to work two evening shifts per week from 11:30-8pm and rotate coverage on Fridays and Saturdays.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • One (1) year of customer service or related experience
  • Fluency in both English and Spanish is required
  • Ability to work effectively in a public facing, multi-tasking environment
  • Demonstrated organization and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Proficiency with standard office tools (Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, databases, email, internet)
  • Professional, positive representation of PGCMLS to the public
  • Ability to perform physical tasks, including reaching, bending, pushing/pulling, and lifting up to 20 pounds

Responsibilities

  • Deliver friendly, responsive customer service​, greeting ​customers, answering phones, and assisting at the service desk
  • Manage library accounts by registering, verifying, renewing, and maintaining accurate records
  • Support daily circulation activities, including checking materials in/out and processing holds
  • Handle fines and fees, balance cash drawers, and assist with daily cash reporting
  • Respond to customer inquiries and escalate concerns when appropriate
  • Sort, shelve, and organize materials to ensure timely access and accurate placement
  • Assist with the delivery and distribution of materials and supplies between branch​ locations
  • Perform minor repairs to books and materials as needed
  • Maintain neat, organized workspaces, displays, and bulletin boards; manage lost and found
  • Prepare correspondence, reports, and maintain departmental files
  • Order and track office supplies
  • Support scheduling updates and department calendars
  • Help train new staff and participate in meetings and professional development
  • Adhere to all policies, procedures, safety protocols, and union contract
  • Perform other duties and support special projects as assigned
