About The Position

Health Sciences North (HSN) is seeking an innovative individual for the position of Chiropodist to assess, treat, and prevent foot disorders in high-risk diabetes patients who require advanced foot care. The Diabetes Care Service (DCS) offers a specialized approach to meet the needs of patients who have been diagnosed with diabetes. At the DCS, the person living with diabetes is recognized as the most important member of the care team. The program exists to help people with self-management of this chronic disease. Controlling diabetes is the best way to prevent or delay its damaging long-term complications. The DCS promotes and provides timely access to quality diabetes education and care for those living in Greater Sudbury and Northeastern Ontario. Inter-professional health care team members are available to support people with diabetes. This team includes chiropodists, dietitians, endocrinologist, internist, nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, physiotherapists and social workers. Requirements

  • Minimum of a three (3) year Diploma in Chiropody, from an accredited college.
  • Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Chiropodists of Ontario (CCO).
  • Certification in injection and aspiration techniques, soft tissue surgical procedures, and Pharmacology is required.
  • Successful completion of a Diabetes Education and Care program or a designation as a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) is required.
  • Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience working in an Inpatient or Outpatient department within a health care environment.
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience working with high-risk diabetes patients.
  • Demonstrated excellent judgment and proven analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) and Ontario Medical Association’s (OMA) Communicable Disease Surveillance Protocols.
  • Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of lean methodology for process improvement.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
  • Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
  • Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage routine correspondence, multiple tasks/projects, diversified workload and rapidly changing priorities and challenging deadlines.
  • Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patients.
  • Successful Vulnerable Sector Check is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform with minimal supervision; to prioritize duties.
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development.

  • Ability to travel between local sites.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally within Northern Ontario.
  • Valid driver’s license with access to reliable vehicle.

Responsibilities

  • Provide all aspects of advanced foot care to high-risk diabetes patients.
  • Provide guidance and quality control during the manufacturing of orthotics to the orthotic technicians.
  • Differentiate between disorders of the feet arising from systemic disease and those arising from local, structural, or functional disorders.
  • Participate in patient rounds and complete reviews.
  • Act as the case manager to assigned patients.
  • Recognize patient conditions beyond the scope of Chiropody and refer patient to appropriate health discipline as required.
  • Provide footcare education to patients.
  • Provide footcare education to diabetes care providers to enhance their knowledge and skills.
  • Liaise with other health care providers and community agencies to provide optimal patient care.
  • Update and develop service policies and procedures in collaboration with the department’s team and supervisor.
  • Adhere to the College of Chiropodists of Ontario’s (CCO) guidelines and regulations.
  • Administer field practice/observation for Chiropody students as appropriate.
  • Evaluate patient care and satisfaction on an ongoing basis and formulate solutions for improvement.
  • Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
  • Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
  • Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
  • Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required.
  • Perform other duties as required.
