About The Position

The Salvation Army is seeking a Children & Youth Pastor to contribute to the spiritual development of children, youth, and their families within the church and community. This role involves mentoring, discipling, encouraging, and modeling Christ-like attitudes, as well as leading individuals to faith in Jesus Christ. The position also includes coordinating and developing relevant programming and ministries for youth, overseeing outreach efforts, and managing a team of volunteers. The Children & Youth Pastor will work as a key member of the church's Pastoral Team, providing pastoral care and oversight for children and youth ministries. This role requires strong communication skills, proficiency in social media, and a commitment to the mission and values of The Salvation Army.

Requirements

  • Completed a post-secondary degree/ college diploma program in a related field of study, such as Children/Youth Ministry, or Biblical & Theological Studies.
  • Current, valid Safe Food Handlers Certification and First Aid/CPR Certification or willingness to obtain.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in Children/Youth leadership, with a background in volunteer coordination and strong outreach and discipleship skills.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of prior related experience working with youth and youth programming.
  • Valid British Columbia Class “5” Driver’s License; personal vehicle and insurance, and a current copy of a Driver’s abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Word, PowerPoint, etc.
  • Excellent knowledge of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube and other social media platforms.
  • Ability to manage multiple social media accounts with creativity and accuracy.
  • Conflict management and resolution skills.
  • Willingness to become a member of Victoria Citadel.
  • Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to teach and lead various activities.

  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the spiritual development of children and youth and their families by mentoring, discipling, encouraging, and modeling Christ-like attitudes and behaviors.
  • Pray with and lead youth and family members to faith in Jesus Christ.
  • Follow up with youth and parents/guardians on spiritual decisions, building relationships, and guiding youth in establishing active links with the Corps and its ministries.
  • Demonstrate keen pastoral interest in community outreach and build relationships with youth and families connected to Community & Family Services.
  • Encourage the volunteer team to engage in spiritual and relational leadership with youth, children, their friends, and their families.
  • Work as a key member of the church’s Pastoral Team, providing pastoral care and oversight for children & youth ministries.
  • Coordinate, maintain, and develop programming and ministries relevant to the Youth of the Church & Resource Centre, including Sunday School, Tuesday night child & youth classes, worship, Bible studies, small groups, fellowship, discipleship, and regular special events.
  • Oversee the development, organization, and mobilization of a comprehensive outreach ministry for communities, providing regular programs and events that connect with youth and families.
  • Develop and organize outreach to schools and neighborhood organizations.
  • Promote, support, and participate in Divisional and Territorial Children and Youth events.
  • Prepare and deliver youth worship services, sermons, and devotionals in cooperation with Corps leaders.
  • Work with existing fundraising efforts to raise funds and support participation in local, divisional, and territorial initiatives.
  • Attend Sunday worship services and Tuesday Night worship gatherings.
  • Participate fully as a part of the congregations, understanding that attendance is an essential part of the ministry responsibility.
  • Commit to personal and professional development in coordination with supervisor.
  • Maintain and develop a team of volunteers; recruit, supervise, orientate, support, and train volunteer leaders for youth discipleship programs.
  • Develop strategies and recommendations for volunteer development.
  • Prepare, post, and maintain all volunteer schedules for supervised volunteers.
  • Ensure LCC and ET compliance with all screening processes for children & youth volunteers, including police checks, statement of applicant forms, and online abuse prevention training.
  • Ensure written records and logs of activities, including activity reports and statistical information, are prepared, reported, and maintained.
  • Assist in the maintenance of volunteer files and statistical records.
  • Draft, design, and distribute promotional material for youth programs and services.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of policies and procedures for youth programs.
  • Communicate in an empathetic manner with volunteer team, congregants, families, and staff.
  • Maintain frequent communication with children and parents using various communication methods.
  • Demonstrate skill in social media applications for advertising and creating videos.
  • Embrace growing technology needs, post to social media platforms, and develop online communications.
  • Inform the Corps Officer regarding any concerns or issues in a timely manner.
  • Maintain program storage areas in a tidy manner.
  • Maintain an up-to-date inventory of equipment and supplies.
  • Seek continual education in food safety and health standards, including maintaining Safe Food Handling Certification.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
  • Hold regular volunteer meetings with all children and youth volunteers.
  • Provide input into the youth budget.
  • Responsible for working with the assigned budget.
