About The Position

The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is seeking a part-time benefited Children’s Program Coordinator who is a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to oversee instructional and non-licensed children’s programs and camps. The Children’s Program Coordinator will have the opportunity to help shape the program as they provide exceptional care and education. The Children’s Program Coordinator will contribute to the department goal of inspiring life-long connections through education, play, and exploration in a premier environment that supports development through active leadership. The Children’s Program Coordinator will be responsible for delivering well-planned, high-quality children’s programs and summer camps. Programs are planned and implemented through collaboration with the Instructors, Head Children’s Leaders and Recreation Supervisor, and review of current registration and surveys to better understand the needs of the programs. This role involves overseeing class curriculum and lesson plans, maximizing employee performance and program effectiveness, and ensuring quality guest interactions. Parents, students, and staff are treated respectfully and timely, and their concerns are heard and addressed fairly. Establishing policies within the program to ensure safety and security of staff and patrons, monitoring patron and staff injury and accident logs, and ensuring staff receive training on safety protocols and policies and procedures are key responsibilities. Additionally, the coordinator will monitor to ensure all policies and procedures for the SBDCRC building, playgrounds and outdoor spaces are being followed and documented, and maintain compliance with all state licensing requirements.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • 1 year of related experience working with preschool or school-aged children in a recreation program or classroom.
  • Applicants must be at least 21 years old.
  • Meet the hiring qualifications outlined by the Virginia Department of Education for Child Care.

Nice To Haves

  • Two (2) + years of experience working with preschool or school-aged children in a recreation program or classroom.
  • Six (6) + months experience in planning and implementing lesson plans, children’s programs and/or activities.
  • Six (6) + months experience supervising and training part-time, seasonal or full-time staff.
  • Knowledge of VA Department of Education licensing standards.
  • Familiarity with children's S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) programming is highly desirable.
  • Experience delivering excellent customer service.
  • Experience utilizing computers and relevant software applications, including but not limited to Microsoft Word.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Experience supervising staff in a licensed or non-licensed children’s program.
