This position's responsibilities are to set up for and to serve meals, and to clean up serving and kitchen areas. The Child Nutrition Helper may perform all or a combination of the following tasks: assisting in preparation of various food items, setting up serving carts and warming ovens, filling condiment containers, setting up utensils, napkins, trays and other serving items, serving meals to students and staff, cleaning and wiping down serving and meal areas, refilling containers and serving items, placing food in serving carts and ovens according to proper food handling procedures, cleaning carts, tables and other food serving areas, storing equipment, cleaning refrigerators, storage areas, grills, deep fryers, shelves and other areas regularly. Other functions may include moving into serving cook position when necessary, assisting in ordering food and supplies, collecting and laundering kitchen linen and other items, performing cashier duties as needed, serving on various district committees and/or departmental work teams, and performing related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position. The position requires performing under strict meal deadlines, timing tasks for completion in proper sequence, anticipating quantities and ordering for cost efficiency and proper storage. The role involves exposure to heat from ovens, burners and steam trays, potentially ordinary infectious diseases, cutting and slicing equipment and machines with moving parts. It requires standing for prolonged periods, moving heavy supplies weighing up to fifty (50) pounds and full pans of food, exposure to noise from kitchen equipment and students, wearing protective clothing, and assisting students by cleaning meal spills. Passage of a pre-placement physical and testing is required.
