About The Position

This position is for 5.5 hours per day at 169 days per year, 4 hours per day at 2 days per year, 8 hours per day at 1 day per year, and 7 hours per day at 10 days per year. The responsibilities include preparing food, setting up for and serving meals, and cleaning up serving and kitchen areas. The Serving Cook may perform all or a combination of the following essential functions: setting up serving carts and warming ovens, filling condiment containers, setting up utensils, napkins, trays, and other serving items, preparing and heating food, serving meals to students and staff, cleaning and wiping down serving and meal areas, guiding the work of Child Nutrition helper(s) and/or Point of Service helper, cleaning carts, tables, and other food serving areas, and cleaning refrigerators, storage areas, grills, deep fryers, and shelves regularly. Other functions include preparing a list of the next day's order for food and supplies, collecting and laundering kitchen linen, performing cashier or point-of-service duties, serving on various district committees and/or departmental work teams, and performing related duties. The position requires performing under strict meal deadlines, timing tasks for completion in proper sequence, anticipating quantities, and ordering for cost efficiency and proper storage. The physical demands include exposure to heat from ovens, burners, and steam trays; exposure to cutting and slicing equipment and machines with moving parts; standing for prolonged periods; moving heavy supplies weighing up to fifty pounds and full pans of food; exposure to high noise levels; wearing protective clothing; assisting students by cleaning meal spills; and potential exposure to ordinary infectious diseases carried by students. Passage of a pre-placement physical and testing is required.

Requirements

  • Ability to follow directions and procedures.
  • Knowledge of proper food handling techniques.
  • Knowledge of food service safety and sanitation.
  • Ability to meet offer vs. serve meal pattern requirements.
  • Ability to serve appropriate quantities and present food attractively.
  • Ability to order and account for food service items.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students and staff.
  • Requires fingerprinting and background check to determine that there have been no convictions involving physical molestation, abuse, injury or neglect of a minor.
  • Must complete training in and adhere to district infection control plan.
  • SNA (State Nutrition Association) certification required.
  • Valid Washington state food handler's permit.

Responsibilities

  • Sets up for serving carts and warming ovens for serving meals to provide nutrition for educational achievement.
  • Fills condiment containers; sets up utensils, napkins, trays and other serving items. Prepares, pans, and heats food and keeps at appropriate temperatures.
  • Serves meals to students and staff; serves appropriate quantities; presents food attractively; assists students in assembling meals on trays.
  • Cleans and wipes down serving and meal areas between breakfast and lunch; refills containers and serving items.
  • Guide the work of Child Nutrition helper(s) and/or Point of Service helper assigned to location. Assists in placing food in serving carts and oven according to proper food handling procedures.
  • Cleans carts, tables and other food serving areas after meal periods; stores equipment.
  • Cleans refrigerator, storage areas, grills, deep fryers, shelves and other areas regularly.
  • Prepares list of next day's order for food and supplies.
  • Collects and may launder kitchen linen and other items.
  • May perform cashier or point-of-service duties as needed.
  • May serve on various district committees and/or departmental work teams. Models appropriate and cooperative behavior, including protecting confidential information, consistent with district ethical guidelines.
  • Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
