The Child Life Specialist will allow for normalization within the hospital environment through therapeutic play interactions and various activities. This role involves planning and implementing special activities for children and adolescents, developing supportive relationships with children, adolescents, and families, and providing direct patient and family interactions and support in areas of expertise, including growth and development, sibling support, and bereavement. The specialist will also provide patients and families with available resources, establish and facilitate support groups, and prepare children and families for treatments and procedures, accompanying them when appropriate to enhance coping and minimize medical trauma. This may include medical play, preparation, support, distraction, and post-procedural support. The role also involves advocating for pain management and comfort measures, educating staff on developmentally appropriate ways to administer medical treatment in a pediatric-friendly manner, and promoting and facilitating patient/family and interdisciplinary communication. The specialist will participate in interdisciplinary rounds and patient care conferences, perform skills safely and independently, and be responsible for personal growth and development through participation in conferences and professional training to enhance skillsets and maintain certification. Additionally, the role includes coordinating, planning, and implementing events with patients and families, and partnering with Public Affairs and Marketing and Advocate Charitable Foundation to coordinate and implement special events with donors and community partners. Management responsibilities include interviewing, selecting, orienting, and supervising student interns and volunteers in the Child Life, Creative Arts Therapies, and Education Department, providing orientation and ongoing training, and offering guidance, direction, and feedback.
