The Child Life Associate plans and implements activities and programs that support and promote normal growth and development, trains and oversees volunteers, and maintains community ties that enhance program delivery. The position works independently in collaboration with the Child Life Music Therapy department to provide a safe environment in play areas and at the patient bedside. Patient and family interactions may occur in inpatient settings, ambulatory care areas, and play spaces. Service hours and care delivery may include evenings and weekends, independent of a Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS). The Child Life group supports children’s development and helps minimize psychological stress and trauma associated with medical care. It promotes understanding and coping with illness and health care experiences through opportunities for play, learning, self-expression, family involvement, peer interaction, and mastery. Child Life staff also advocate for children and families and serve as resources to staff and the community on child development and child health experiences.
