About The Position

The Salvation Army is seeking a passionate Child Care Teacher to join their team. This role is mission-driven, diverse, collaborative, and focused on positive results for people. The Child Care Teacher will plan, supervise, and implement the program for their assigned class in accordance with the policies and philosophies of The Salvation Army, gearing the program to the needs of each individual child. This position requires treating each child with dignity and respect, helping them become aware of their role as an integral member of the group, and maintaining the classroom environment. The teacher will also share in housekeeping responsibilities, attend staff meetings, submit daily lunch counts, and participate in professional growth activities. Additionally, the role involves implementing methods for utilizing classroom assistants, volunteers, and establishing positive relationships with parents, notifying them of sick children and return policies. The teacher will also evaluate children's development, write goals for each child, and conduct parent/teacher conferences. Travel may be required.

Requirements

  • Candidates must have a passion for fulfilling the mission of The Salvation Army and must be articulate in presenting the same to others.
  • Candidates must successfully pass the pre-employment background inquiry.
  • Minimum of an Associate's degree in Early Childhood Education or actively working towards it with at least nine semester hours already completed.
  • Have a working knowledge of developmentally appropriate practice for children ages 0-6.
  • Comply with Illinois Department of Child and Family Services employment eligibility.
  • Must have or be willing to obtain within 90 days CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Must be able to pass background check.
  • Maintain confidentiality of parents and child's information.
  • Must maintain twenty hours of continuing education per year.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, supervise and implement the program for the class in accordance with the polices and philosophies of The Salvation Army.
  • Gear the program to the needs of each individual child with concern for his/her interests, abilities, special talents, individual style and pace of learning.
  • Treat each child with dignity and respect.
  • Help each child become aware of his/her role as an integral member of the group.
  • Responsible for the ordered arrangement, appearance, decor and learning environment of the classroom.
  • Assume an equal share of the joint housekeeping responsibilities of the staff.
  • Attend all staff meetings.
  • Submit daily lunch count to the kitchen.
  • Participate in required training programs, conferences, courses and other aspects of professional growth.
  • Implement methods for effectively utilizing the services of classroom assistants, student teachers and volunteers.
  • Plan and implement methods of establishing a positive liaison with the parents of each child.
  • Notify parents of sick children and relay policies for the child's return to the classroom.
  • Assist in community oriented events and activities.
  • Evaluate all children for development or make contact for each child to be evaluated.
  • Write goals for each child in the classroom.
  • Conduct at least one parent/teacher conference each school year.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
