About The Position

The Salvation Army is seeking a Child Care Support Worker to provide a wholesome, safe, and happy learning environment for children, modeling the example of Jesus. This role involves organizing, planning, and implementing programs responsive to the spiritual, social, physical, emotional, educational, and recreational needs of each child, under the direction of the Supervisor. The aim is to ensure all activities are age-appropriate and co-constructed to provide an effective and safe learning and development experience, intentionally reflecting the mission of The Salvation Army.

Requirements

  • Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Completion of a formal post-secondary/college Diploma program of at least one full academic year in Early Childhood Education, from a recognized institution or equivalent.
  • Must maintain a current, valid First Aid & C.P.R. Certificate.
  • Must complete the mandatory provincial curriculum training and hold certification required by the province. (First Aid 20 hours responsible adult certificate)

  • One year of related experience.
  • Knowledge and experience in supervising and implementing programs and completing evaluations related to programming.
  • The Salvation Army Armatus abuse training must be completed immediately upon hiring.
  • Demonstrates an active interest and attitude suitable for working with large groups of children.
  • Must have a workable concept of childcare centres.
  • Ability to put children at ease and create a warm and friendly environment in which a child can develop fully.
  • Ability to communicate in kind, peaceful manner.

Responsibilities

  • Provides input in planning and assists with the implementation of appropriate age-based activities according to skill and learning levels that promote social interaction and personal development.
  • Assists with teaching age-appropriate Bible Lessons to the children.
  • May assist in orientating new children and families; provides on-going feedback on child’s development and behavior.
  • Ensures that all information about children, family, staff, visitors and volunteers are strictly confidential; and that activity records and statistics are confidentially secured.
  • Assists with effective risk management; monitoring food safety, medication storage/disbursement, allergies, facility cleanliness/maintenance; provides emergency first aid and completes, reports and files incident reports as required.
  • Ensures that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is exemplified in the performance of all job responsibilities and through personal example.
  • Works with the Supervisor to ensure that programs meet contractual, legal and internal accreditation requirements; ensures full compliance with child protection legislation and intervene when necessary.
  • Works with Supervisor to plan programs and other administration duties as required.
  • Support implementation and evaluation of the age-appropriate programs.
  • Use a variety of observation and documentation techniques.
  • Facilitate cognitive, language, social, emotional, creative, and physical development of children and acceptance of diversity.
  • Support the holistic development of all children.
  • Build meaningful relationships with the children.
  • Identify and expand upon learning opportunities (teachable moments).
  • Identify and support child’s individual learning and development.
