About The Position

Under the direction of the Registered Early Childhood Educators (RECEs), the Child Care Aide assists, supervises, and guides children throughout their day, supporting a range of daily activities and care routines, including but not limited to indoor and outdoor play, individual and group care routines, mealtimes and feeding, cubby room area routines, diapering and washroom routines, and rest times. This is a part-time, indefinite position with no guaranteed minimum hours per pay period. Candidates are expected to have availability between 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with potential for split shifts. A minimum of 3-day availability is required, with one day being a Monday or Friday. 5-day availability is preferred for scheduling. Work may be scheduled in advance or be call-in work on the day of the shift. Successful candidates with full 5-day availability may be considered for Long-Term Assignments of at least 11 consecutive working days up to 3 months, with the possibility of extension. Upon completion of a Long-Term Assignment, the employee returns to the casual pool for call-in work or known work shifts. Candidates will not be assigned a base location and must be available to work at multiple Toronto Early Learning & Child Care Centres.

Requirements

  • Experience caring for children of up to 4 years of age in a group setting in either a volunteer or employment capacity.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid standard first aid certification including infant and child cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) prior to the start of employment.
  • Strong ability to work effectively as a team member and accurately follow instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to lift/carry children of various ages and weighing up to 20 kg.
  • Ability to use computers, access and complete online training modules.
  • Ability to assist with and adhere to Health & Safety practices and protocols including sanitizing, disinfecting, etc.
  • General knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Child Care and Early Years Act, Child and Family Services Act with the ability to apply such legislation in the workplace.
  • General knowledge of Toronto Public Health Guidelines relating to child care environments.
  • Ability to support and implement change reflective of the City of Toronto's Action plan for Confronting Anti-Black Racism.
  • Ability to support and implement change reflective of the City of Toronto's Commitment to Indigenous Communities and Reconciliation Action Plan.
  • Ability to support the Toronto Public Service values to ensure a culture that champions equity, diversity and respectful workplaces.
  • Must have a valid email address and be able to communicate on a regular basis through email.
  • Must be available for call-in work.
  • Must have a local telephone number in order to receive call-in work.
  • Must have the ability to travel to and work from multiple locations.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of an Early Childhood Assistant Certificate would be considered an asset.
  • Candidates are expected to have availability between the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • Minimum 3-day availability is required, with one of those days being either a Monday or Friday.
  • 5-day availability would be preferred for scheduling purposes.
  • For candidates who hold a diploma in Early Childhood Education or equivalent, you will also be required to be registered and remain in good standing with the College of Early Childhood Educators.

Responsibilities

  • Assists, supervises, and guides children throughout their day, supporting a range of daily activities and care routines, including but not limited to indoor and outdoor play, individual and group care routines, mealtimes and feeding, cubby room area routines, diapering and washroom routines, and rest times.
  • Assists with the set-up of play areas as planned by RECEs.
  • Assists in set-up and clean-up of children’s activities and learning areas, including snacks and meals, etc.
  • Assists in the completion of forms, documenting children’s routines, accidents, etc.
  • Assists in the supervision of the children during outdoor playground time, ensuring all areas are safe from hazards. (e.g. removal of broken equipment from play areas).
  • Assists in escorting children to Public and Separate Schools and trips outside the Early Learning & Child Care Centre. (e.g. Local community walks and bus trips).
  • Provides coverage to maintain legislated ratios at various times of the day.
  • Monitors and supervises small groups of children.
  • Interacts with children of various ages in a positive, nurturing and developmentally appropriate manner.
  • Interacts with parents, colleagues, and visitors in a professional manner.
  • Assists with laundry and dishwashing duties as needed.
