About The Position

York Hills is a children and youth mental health agency that offers a wide range of mental health services, supports and partnerships providing meaningful and evidence informed/based treatment to children, and youth, aged 0 to 18 years, and their families. Reporting to the Manager of Day Treatment Classrooms, the Day Treatment Child and Youth Worker is responsible for providing assessment, intervention, treatment, advocacy and support to children and youth who are experiencing difficulty functioning in a regular classroom setting because of social, emotional and/or behavioural concerns. Responsibilities focus on a multi-disciplinary approach to treatment and intervention that is consistent and complimentary to a school-based mental health intervention, an integrated agency model, and the school community. The Child and Youth Worker Day Treatment works collaboratively with various staff and departments, and upholds the Agency’s Mission, Vision and Values, while contributing to a positive workplace environment.

Requirements

  • Completion of a post-secondary education in Child and Youth Care, Social Work or related field.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of related experience.
  • Functional technological skills (e.g., Office 365, MS Office, SharePoint, software applications).
  • Awareness and appreciation for the dynamics of equity issues (diversity, equity and inclusion), especially as it relates to gender, ethnicity, race, and economic status.
  • Experience utilizing a variety of interventions and skilled in milieu counselling, assessment and group work.
  • Achieves and maintains certification in agency approved Crisis Intervention methodology.
  • Knowledge of child and youth mental health legislation and regulations, including knowledge of mental health barriers, behaviours and supports required to effectively support children and youth in a milieu setting.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, including editing skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to liaison and build positive relationships with agency internal services, clients and external partners.
  • Ability to demonstrate sound decision-making in an intensive environment.
  • Exhibits strong observation and attention to detail skills related to client mental status, crisis prevention and in-moment client needs.
  • Employs emotional intelligence to manage and co-regulate self and client during intensive situations.
  • Competent in trauma-informed practice, child development, and child and youth care relational practice.
  • May require G driver’s licence, driver’s abstract and letter of experience from the insurance company to drive the agency vehicle.
  • Identification with the strategic mission, vision and values of the organization including inclusion, collaboration, people centred, knowledgeable and courageous.
  • Must possess a satisfactory Police Record Check.
  • Ability to perform other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in promoting and supporting the Mission, Vision, and Values statements, ensuring adherence to operational and service policies and procedures while maintaining ethical conduct.
  • Demonstrates a strong understanding of ethical behaviour and professional conduct, including contributing to ensuring ethical standards are upheld and participation in quality improvement standards.
  • Develops positive rapport with clients in the program to create psychological safety and trust through relationship-building activities and observation of the client’s physical and emotional well-being.
  • Participates in the development and maintenance of a therapeutic classroom environment including the integration of curriculum requirements and mental health needs.
  • Collaborates as part of a multi-disciplinary team to facilitate the assessment and treatment needs of individual students as assigned for case management.
  • Engages in communication with caregivers to provide support and ensure effective treatment implementation.
  • Ensures the safety and well-being of each student including being knowledgeable of all school-based safety procedures such as fire safety and lock down procedures in addition to duty to report procedures.
  • Ensures client safety by following Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) guidelines for crisis prevention and de-escalation, following agency policies and procedures.
  • Intervenes physically in crisis situations to reduce harm to the client, self or others in accordance with the principles and methods of the agency approved crisis intervention model.
  • Implements behavioural and crisis interventions strategies as guided by safety and emotional needs and individual treatment plans.
  • Facilitates therapeutic groups within the day treatment setting addressing a variety of topics.
  • Knowledgeable of and effectively manages and administers all medications and medical issues required pertaining to each student and accessing medical resources as needed.
  • Maintaining a system of documentation and reporting that is consistent with the standards and procedures, legislation and practices of York Hills.
  • Ensures adherence to all requirements as indicated in the Occupational Health and Safety Act, York Hills health and safety policies and procedures, including appropriate clothing attire and footwear, up to date fire safety and fire extinguisher training.
  • Maintains certification for all crisis and behavioral management training.
  • Participates in all team and organization meetings as required.
  • Participates in regular supervision with Manager of Classrooms.
  • May be required to drive clients and supplies in an agency vehicle.
  • Builds and maintains interactions with colleagues focused on individual, team and organization success.

  • Attends and participates in required training and meetings.
