About The Position

VHA Home HealthCare (VHA) is seeking a Child and Family Support Worker (CFSW) to provide child care and home support to families with children from birth to 4 years old, who are recovering from a medical and/or crisis situation. The role involves offering emotional support and guidance to parents, particularly those experiencing mental health challenges such as postpartum depression. The CFSW will assist families with practical childcare and home support activities, including light housekeeping and essential childcare tasks.

Requirements

  • 2 years’ experience in childcare and/or international trained experience and/or Certification in one of the following: Early Childhood Education Certificate/Diploma, Childcare Assistant, Mothercraft Childcare Certificate. Midwife, PSW Certificate recognized curriculum approved by the Ministry of Colleges and Universities or Ministry of Education, or international trained Registered Nurses, Registered Practical Nurse, Midwife or Physician
  • First AID/CPR Certificate is an asset
  • At least 1 year of experience working in the community.
  • Experience with mental health i.e. postpartum depression is an asset.
  • Experience in developing education and recreational activities age appropriate.
  • Experience working with children with special needs i.e. Autism.
  • Experience in teaching/mentoring new parents
  • Experience in and assistance with the preparation of nutrition meals – required.

Responsibilities

  • Provides care to children age 0-4 yrs old with all of their activities of daily living (ADLS).
  • Provides physical and emotional support to parents who are recovering from a medical health condition in carrying out normal household routines, or activities of daily living (such as light cleaning and laundry, child care).
  • Provides food planning and preparation, if needed, ensuring meals are nutritious and consider special diets.
  • Provides a range of activities in caring for infants, such as personal infant care like bathing, changing diapers, and infant stimulation.
  • May be required to provide teaching and demonstration of caring activities to assist the parent(s) in learning to conduct these activities independently.
  • Encourages the parent to do as much independently as possible.
  • Provides teaching and mentoring to first-time parents in caring for newborns and/or special needs.
  • Provides emotional support and guidance in caring for multiple newborns, including establishing routines and schedules.
  • Develops and plans educational and recreational activities that are age-appropriate.
