About The Position

The Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center is seeking an accomplished academic pathologist to serve as Chief of Surgical Pathology. This is an exceptional leadership opportunity to guide and grow a nationally distinguished surgical pathology program within an NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center dedicated to advancing diagnostic excellence, translational discovery, and multidisciplinary cancer care. The successful candidate will establish and implement the strategic clinical, academic, and scientific vision for the Surgical Pathology Service while collaborating closely with highly specialized multidisciplinary oncology teams across surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, pathology, radiology, and translational science. This role offers the opportunity to work within a collegial academic environment supporting a broad spectrum of complex oncologic pathology cases from both institutional and consultation practices. We are seeking a visionary physician leader passionate about surgical pathology, translational research, mentorship, and advancing innovative approaches to cancer diagnosis and discovery.

Requirements

  • MD, DO, or equivalent degree with Board Certification in Anatomic Pathology and expertise in Surgical Pathology
  • Demonstrated academic accomplishments consistent with a senior faculty appointment
  • Strong diagnostic expertise in oncologic surgical pathology
  • Experience leading or contributing to translational research, academic pathology programs, or multidisciplinary oncology initiatives
  • Commitment to multidisciplinary collaboration and patient-centered diagnostic excellence
  • Interest in developing and expanding independent translational or clinical research programs
  • Passion for mentorship, faculty development, and academic leadership
  • Executive presence, strategic vision, and the ability to foster collaboration across clinical, scientific, and institutional teams
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills within complex academic medical environments
  • Dedication to fostering a culture grounded in innovation, inclusion, accountability, compassion, scientific rigor, safety, and High Reliability Organization principles
  • License to practice as a Medical Doctor in the State of New York or License to practice as a dentist in the State of New York as required for the area of expertise.
  • Possession of a valid medical specialty certificate in area of expertise
  • Medical Doctor degree or Doctor of Dental Science degree as required for the area of expertise, and the equivalent of one (1) year of full-time experience in the area of expertise including six (6) months in a supervisory, administrative, consultative, managerial or executive capacity.

  • A minimum rank of associate professor
  • Medical Doctor degree, preferably Thoracic fellowship trained, and at least five (5) year of full-time experience and documented academic record in the area of expertise

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership for the Surgical Pathology Service and establish long-term clinical, operational, academic, and scientific priorities
  • Deliver expert diagnostic interpretation across a broad range of complex oncologic surgical pathology cases
  • Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary oncology teams across surgical, medical, and radiation oncology programs
  • Support innovative and patient-centered diagnostic approaches within cancer care
  • Advance quality initiatives, operational excellence, and subspecialty pathology innovation within the division
  • Define and advance the translational and scientific vision for surgical pathology research
  • Develop and support independent and collaborative translational research programs
  • Utilize Roswell Park’s extensive shared resources, biorepositories, molecular platforms, and advanced analytical infrastructure
  • Collaborate with clinical investigators and multidisciplinary scientists on translational studies and clinical trials
  • Participate in department-sponsored pathology investigations and institutional translational research initiatives
  • Publish and present scholarly work advancing oncologic pathology and diagnostic innovation
  • Mentor faculty, fellows, residents, medical students, and trainees within pathology and oncology programs
  • Participate in educational conferences, tumor boards, lectures, and institutional academic initiatives
  • Foster a collaborative culture emphasizing mentorship, scientific rigor, innovation, and continuous learning
  • Support academic growth and faculty development within the department
  • Build strong interdisciplinary relationships across pathology, oncology, translational science, and institutional leadership
  • Contribute to strategic growth initiatives enhancing the national visibility of the Surgical Pathology Service
  • Foster a culture aligned with High Reliability Organization principles emphasizing accountability, innovation, patient safety, and teamwork
