About The Position

The Chief Probation/Parole Officer (CPPO) supervises Probation/Parole Officers, Judicial Services Coordinators, and clerical staff in the unit. The CPPO coordinates and manages the unit’s workflow to ensure the effective implementation of Community Supervision goals and strategies. The CPPO handles daily operations and makes decisions about offender supervision. This includes case assignments, workflow coordination, scheduling, time tracking, and staff training. The CPPO also deals with discipline, conflicts, and complaints as needed, oversees team staffing and employee performance. The offender population consists of individuals sentenced by the Court or ordered by the Post-Release Supervision and Parole Commission. Offenders range from high-risk to low risk but many of them are high-risk and need careful supervision, reentry planning, and strong/ tailored case management. This job is characterized by significant role modeling, coaching, reinforcement of pro-social behaviors, teaching pro-social and decision-making skills to staff. The CPPO ensures employees are skilled in their job responsibilities and fosters an environment that supports their professional growth and development. The CPPO is also responsible for holding staff accountable for their workload and case management and must effectively plan and direct tasks to meet deadlines. The CPPO frequently engages in crisis interventions and meets with stakeholders, requiring a flexible schedule that includes regular 8-5 hours and the need to be available 24/7 for emergency calls. The CPPO is required to quickly analyze crisis situations and provide immediate responses, therefore, is often involved in developing and carrying out specialized control strategies independently. The CPPO may handle an active caseload with possible second-shift hours and/or may serve on EHA response team which includes on-call status and the need to respond to EHA violations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution.
  • Four years of experience as a North Carolina Probation/Parole Officer, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • Must possess the skills necessary to qualify annually with a firearm and unarmed self-defense.
  • Must complete CPR annually.
  • Must be indirectly exposed to O.C. Pepper Spray as part of a training exercise.
  • Must reside within 30 miles of the county of assignment within 90 days of their start date.
  • Demonstrated experience with case planning, structured intervention worksheets and delegated authority.
  • Working knowledge of structured sentencing, evidence-based principles, and Justice Reinvestment.
  • Thorough knowledge of North Carolina offender supervision and determination of appropriate levels, available treatment services and community resources.
  • Demonstrated initiative in professional development and growth by engaging in additional training opportunities, including the DAC Career Progression Program.
  • Must apply inclusive communication and respectful practices that reflect an understanding of diverse populations and foster equity, trust, and effective collaboration.
  • Must pass a background check.
