About The Position

Reports to the Chief of the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery. Manages daily operations of the Perfusion Division of the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery. Strives to maintain a positive and productive working environment to promote collaboration between surgeons, anesthesiologists, and hospital staff to provide outstanding patient health care. Provides guidance in the achievement of long-term goals for the division.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in an allied health field, perfusion, or related scientific field, and
  • Graduate of an accredited Perfusion program
  • 7 years of experience as a Perfusionist
  • (PERF) PERFUSIONIST - American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion Certified and must have an active Perfusion license by Texas Medical Board. Upon Hire and
  • (BLS) BASIC LIFE SUPPORT through course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) Upon Hire and
  • (ACLS) ADV CARDIAC LIFE SUPPORT through course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) Upon Hire

Responsibilities

  • Operates extracorporeal circulation and autotransfusion equipment during adult cardio-thoracic procedures at UT Southwestern Medical Center and affiliates.
  • Provides standby support for cath lab procedures at UT Southwestern Medical Center and affiliates.
  • Operates autotransfusion equipment during liver transplant procedures at Clements University Hospital
  • Operates ECMO equipment and provides expert support to nursing ECMO specialists at UT Southwestern Medical Center and affiliates.
  • Operates cardiac assist devices in the operating room setting at UT Southwestern Medical Center and affiliates.
  • Shares equal on-call duties with all members of the perfusion team.
  • Promotes a culture of safety and quality in patient care.
  • Develops, reviews and implements perfusion protocols.
  • Identifies, reviews and implements innovations in the field of perfusion to further improve clinical outcomes.
  • Mentors new and experienced team members
  • Provides staff with the resources necessary to perform their duties safely and competently.
  • Identifies opportunities for improvement in operational efficiencies and establishes a plan for development and implementation of remedies.
  • Communicates and ensures that team members are informed of and adhere to the goals of the department.
  • Oversees and coordinates patient care daily by assigning workload to team members.
  • Maintains a staffing plan and schedule that meets patient care and departmental needs.
  • Oversees the creation and maintenance of the perfusion team's on-call schedule.
  • Authorizes leave of absence for team members.
  • Ensures ongoing maintenance of staff's continuing education, board certification and state licensure.
  • Evaluates travel budgets, for attendance of continuing education events, in advance of final review and approval by the Chief of the department.
  • Provides annual performance evaluations of team members to promote personal and professional development.
  • Manages perfusion case database.
  • Creates monthly billing information for the Division of Perfusion
  • Creates and manages an annual budget for the Division of Perfusion
  • Establishes and manages vendor relationships to improve negotiations in sourcing of capital equipment and consumables.
  • Works with Materials Management personnel to ensure product inventory levels meet requirements.
  • Represents the Division of Perfusion in the capital equipment acquisition planning process.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
