About The Position

The Chief Perfusionist is responsible for the clinical and administrative oversight of the perfusion department at Anne Arundel Medical Center. This role involves maintaining competency assessments for self and staff, coordinating staff development, and ensuring department policies and protocols are up-to-date and aligned with PI data. The Chief Perfusionist interprets technical and clinical data to ensure safe patient care, operates cardiopulmonary bypass machines and other extracorporeal equipment, and completes performance evaluations for all perfusion staff. They possess the decision-making skills to determine the adequacy of bypass and the effectiveness of equipment, and the interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with healthcare professionals. Additionally, this role monitors departmental supply usage and waste, maintains inventory, initiates cost-saving strategies, and interprets age-specific responses for patient care. The Chief Perfusionist maintains perfusion quality control data, reports to CV Leadership monthly, and ensures the department operates within regulatory guidelines while supporting research initiatives.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a CAAHEP (Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Educational Programs) Perfusion program
  • B.S. degree in related healthcare field
  • 3-5 years of experience in perfusion leadership
  • Certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP) or ABCP eligibility.
  • Licensure as “Perfusion Advanced” (currently a CCP) by the Maryland Board of Physicians
  • CPR certification (must have American Heart Association - Health Care Provider)

Nice To Haves

  • Master degree preferred
  • “Perfusion Basic” (not a CCP) - Graduate of a CAAHEP Perfusion program but have not completed the requirements to take the ABCP exam. Tenure contingent on obtaining licensure as Perfusion Advanced within 2 years of Perfusion Basic title

Responsibilities

  • Maintains competency assessment for self and staff, ensuring accuracy and completeness of all credentialing requirements and associated documentation.
  • Coordinates staff development and maintains department policies and protocols, utilizing PI data.
  • Interprets a variety of technical and clinical data necessary to facilitate the most effective and safe patient care.
  • Operates Cardiopulmonary bypass machine and other extracorporeal equipment as necessary to support cardiac and non-cardiac patients.
  • Completes performance evaluation on all perfusion staff.
  • Possess the decision making skills necessary to determine adequacy of bypass and effectiveness of other extracorporeal equipment operated by the Perfusion Department.
  • Possesses the interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with other health care professionals in order to exchange and relay information.
  • Monitors departmental perfusion supply usage and waste, maintains appropriate supply inventory.
  • Initiates cost saving strategies.
  • Exhibits communication skills necessary to interpret age specific responses to assessment, treatment, and interactions with others.
  • Maintains perfusion quality control data and reports monthly to CV Leadership.
  • Ensures the perfusion department operates within all regulatory guidelines and supports research initiatives.
