About The Position

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) provides strategic and operational leadership for key internal functions of Indian River Habitat for Humanity, ensuring the organization operates efficiently, compliantly, and in alignment with its mission to provide safe, affordable housing. The COO is responsible for overseeing the performance and growth of the ReStore, supporting construction operations with a strong emphasis on process improvement and cost efficiency, and leading long-range operational planning. The COO works closely with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) to ensure strong cross-department collaboration, operational alignment, and effective execution of the organization’s strategic priorities. Together, this leadership team ensures resources, systems, and processes are coordinated to maximize the organization’s impact in serving families in Indian River County. The COO also oversees core organizational infrastructure including Human Resources, Compliance, Facilities, and Information Technology, ensuring the organization has the systems, processes, and culture necessary to scale its impact and support staff, volunteers, and community partners.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with the CEO to develop and implement operational strategies that advance the organization’s mission and strategic plan.
  • Work closely with the CFO and CSO to facilitate cross-department collaboration, ensuring financial planning, strategic initiatives, and operational execution are aligned.
  • Lead cross-functional coordination to improve communication, workflow efficiency, and accountability across departments.
  • Establish operational metrics and performance indicators to monitor effectiveness and drive continuous improvement.
  • Identify opportunities for operational efficiencies, cost savings, and improved organizational performance.
  • Support organization-wide management of cash flow and long-range financial sustainability through operational efficiency.
  • Provide strategic oversight of the Habitat ReStore, ensuring strong financial performance and mission alignment.
  • Work with ReStore leadership to grow revenue, optimize donation acquisition, and improve operational systems.
  • Implement best practices in retail operations, inventory management, logistics, and volunteer engagement.
  • Ensure strong safety practices within the ReStore, including training, procedures, and compliance with workplace safety standards for staff, volunteers, and customers.
  • Maintain compliance with applicable retail, safety, and operational regulations.
  • Support the construction team with operational systems that improve project efficiency and cost control.
  • Lead initiatives focused on process improvement, workflow optimization, and construction cost savings.
  • Collaborate with construction leadership on procurement, vendor relationships, and supply chain management.
  • Assist with production planning to support long-term homebuilding goals.
  • Promote and support a strong safety culture on construction sites, ensuring policies, training, and procedures meet regulatory and organizational standards.
  • Lead long-range operational planning in alignment with the organization’s strategic goals.
  • Work collaboratively with the CFO and CSO to ensure operational plans support financial sustainability and strategic growth initiatives.
  • Develop systems and infrastructure that support scaling the number of homes built and families served.
  • Identify operational risks and opportunities and develop plans to address them.
  • Provide executive oversight and strategic partnership to the Human Resources function, supporting a capable HR leader responsible for day-to-day operations.
  • Partner with HR leadership to align human resources strategy with organizational goals, culture, and mission.
  • Ensure compliance with employment laws and support effective policies, workforce planning, and talent development initiatives.
  • Serve as a strategic advisor and escalation point for complex employee relations and organizational development matters.
  • Ensure organizational compliance with local, state, and federal regulations as well as standards established by Habitat for Humanity International.
  • In partnership with CFO, maintain and strengthen organizational policies, procedures, and internal controls that ensure accountability and operational integrity.
  • Monitor compliance requirements across operational areas including retail operations, construction, human resources, and workplace safety.
  • Oversee maintenance and management of organizational facilities including offices, construction facilities, and ReStore locations.
  • Ensure facilities are safe, efficient, and supportive of staff, volunteers, and customers.
  • Oversee IT infrastructure and systems supporting staff, operations, and data management.
  • Ensure system reliability, cybersecurity awareness, and appropriate technology investments.
  • Identify technology solutions that improve operational efficiency and support data-driven decision making.
