About The Position

KVII ABC 7 in Amarillo, Texas is looking for our next Chief Meteorologist — a trusted, steady, and engaging weather leader who can own the forecast across broadcast, digital, streaming, and social platforms. This is not a quiet weather market. If you want to forecast it, we probably get it: tornadoes, giant hail, flash flooding, hurricane-force winds, blizzards, snowstorms, wildfires, dust storms, extreme heat, Arctic cold. Our DMA covers the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles, plus four counties in eastern New Mexico. We need a Chief Meteorologist who understands that weather here is not background information. It is public safety, viewer trust, and community service.

Requirements

  • Proven on-air weather experience.
  • Strong forecasting, writing, and live presentation skills.
  • A deep understanding of severe weather, radar interpretation, warning communication, and public-safety messaging.
  • Digital and social media fluency.
  • The ability to communicate urgency without hype.
  • Strong news judgment and the ability to work with newsroom leaders during breaking weather.
  • A team-first mindset.
  • Willingness to come in off duty when severe weather threatens the area.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Baron Lynx or similar weather graphics/radar systems is a plus.
  • AMS or NWA seal preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Lead daily weather coverage for KVII ABC 7 and our digital platforms.
  • Forecast, produce, and present clear, concise, and compelling weathercasts.
  • Own severe weather coverage when storms threaten our area.
  • Issue timely warnings, alerts, explainers, and safety information.
  • Report live during severe weather, winter weather, fire-weather events, flooding, and other high-impact situations.
  • Use radar, models, graphics, maps, and storytelling to make complex weather understandable.
  • Work closely with producers, anchors, reporters, photographers, and digital staff on weather-driven coverage.
  • Write and publish weather stories, forecasts, alerts, and explainers for digital and social platforms.
  • Be highly active on social media before, during, and after weather events.
  • Make public appearances and represent the station in the community.
  • Mentor and help develop the weather team.
  • Build viewer trust through accuracy, urgency, consistency, and calm leadership.
