About The Position

This is skilled supervisory work in the maintenance and repair of automotive and related equipment. Work entails skilled repair and maintenance of municipal automotive, construction, and related equipment. Work entails supervising and personally performing various difficult repair tasks, such as diagnosing complex equipment malfunctions and fabricating parts. Chief mechanic must exercise initiative and discretion in the assignment of various repair tasks and be responsible for day-to-day results.

Requirements

  • Clear understanding and skill in the methods, practices, materials, tools and equipment of the automotive mechanic trade.
  • Clear understanding of the operating and repair characteristics of a variety of public works equipment.
  • Clear understanding of the hazards and safety precautions of the mechanical trade.
  • Clear understanding of the principles of internal combustion engines.
  • Supervisory experience of skilled mechanics and other shop workers.
  • Defect diagnosis and repair of a wide variety of maintenance and construction equipment.
  • Knowledge of welding and machinist trades.
  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Five years experience as a working automotive mechanic.
  • Must be certified to perform state inspections.
  • Must be able to obtain a Class A UST operator license and maintain the license during employment.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a minimum Class 7 inspection license (required within 6 months of date of hire).
  • Must reside within 30 minutes of the Public Works facility at 1250 Lindendale Drive, 15228 within 10 months of hire.

  • Knowledge of hybrid and electric vehicles a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares specifications and documents for the purchase of vehicles and equipment.
  • Works with vendors to order and procure new vehicles and equipment.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair diesel engines.
  • Maintains records related to repairs, preventative maintenance, and updates of the entire fleet.
  • Works with the public works staff members to determine vehicle and equipment types that are purchased to replace existing units.
  • Assists the Director and Superintendent with the preparation of the annual operating budget and capital improvement budget as they relate to fleet management.
  • Manages fuel system, maintaining inventory and dispensing unleaded and diesel fuels for all fleet vehicles.
  • Assign work to mechanics and other helpers engaged in the overhaul and repair of automobiles, trucks, and other equipment.
  • Make initial inspection in difficult cases and diagnoses trouble and inspect work in process and upon completion.
  • Supervise maintenance of repair equipment and inspect tools and equipment for condition and proper use; approve stock orders for needed parts.
  • Perform required state inspections of vehicles and equipment.
  • Estimate and carry out preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
  • Perform mechanical work in the repair and overhaul of equipment.
  • Maintains regular and punctual attendance.
  • Performs all other work assigned.
