About The Position

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is responsible for providing 1.1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water daily, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing pollution. The DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, employing nearly 6,000 people. The Bureau of Customer Services (BCS) within the DEP oversees metering, billing, and field inspection operations for over 800,000 accounts citywide, collecting more than $4.5 billion in revenue annually. The BCS is seeking a qualified Associate Water Use Inspector Level II to advance to Associate Water Use Inspector Level III and serve as the Chief Inspector for the Bronx. This role reports directly to the Director of Field Services and will oversee a unit responsible for inspections, meter investigations, repairs, replacements, and enforcement actions throughout the Bronx.

Requirements

  • Currently serving permanently as an Associate Water Use Inspector Level II.
  • At least three years of satisfactory, full time experience as an Associate Water Use Inspector Level II.
  • Three years of satisfactory full-time mechanical experience in plumbing or in water use inspection, one year of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity; or Education and/or experience equivalent to the above.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily operations of the Bronx Field Inspection Unit, including scheduling, field deployment, and quality control.
  • Supervise, train, counsel, and evaluate Water Use Inspectors and Associate Inspectors assigned to Bronx operations.
  • Conduct or direct inspections, follow-up investigations, and enforcement actions related to water use, meter accuracy, and regulatory compliance.
  • Review and evaluate submissions related to the sale or use of water and ensure proper interpretation and application of Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) rules and regulations.
  • Prepare and review written reports, summaries, and related documentation.
  • Coordinate all Bronx summons and violation activity, including submission to the Environmental Control Board (ECB) and assignment of staff required to appear at hearings.
  • Represent Bureau of Customer Services (BCS) at Environmental Control Board (ECB) hearings and provide technical testimony when required.
  • Assist in planning special inspection programs and data driven initiatives based on management information reports.
  • Operate a motor vehicle when necessary.
