About The Position

Cape is hiring a Chief Information Security Officer to own the strategy and execution of security across its network, products, and corporate systems. The CISO will enable rapid product innovation while protecting Cape’s goal of operating the most secure commercial mobile network. This is a build-and-defend role with responsibility for resourcing, maturing, and scaling a technical security, IT, and compliance organization as the company grows. The CISO will work in close partnership with Engineering and the executive team, lead security across a carrier-grade network and corporate environment, and communicate technical risks and tradeoffs to the board and executives. The role is based in Cape’s NYC or DC office and reports to founder and CEO John Doyle.

Requirements

  • At least 10 years of experience in information security.
  • At least 5 years in a senior security leadership role such as CISO, VP Security, or Head of Security at a company with meaningful infrastructure or regulatory complexity.
  • Eligible and willing to obtain TS/SCI clearance.
  • Experience managing geographically dispersed teams of engineers.
  • A track record of building security teams and programs from an early stage.
  • Deep technical credibility, including the ability to discuss architecture and risk with engineers and communicate effectively with executive leadership and the board.
  • Belief that privacy and security are inseparable and that protecting users may require resisting pressure to compromise on either.
  • Excellent judgment under ambiguity and the ability to move quickly without cutting important corners.

Nice To Haves

  • Direct experience securing telecom, network infrastructure, or other critical infrastructure, including familiarity with SS7, radio networks, or core carrier systems; alternatively, experience securing environments of comparable complexity such as cloud infrastructure providers or fintech.
  • Experience securing an environment with Forward Deployed Engineers and managing complexity around high-risk travel.

Responsibilities

  • Own Cape’s end-to-end security strategy across network infrastructure, product and application security, cloud and corporate IT, and physical and personnel security.
  • Build and lead a security team capable of defending a carrier-grade network against sophisticated adversaries, including nation-state actors.
  • Design and drive security architecture and controls for Cape’s self-operated cellular network, from the radio access network through core infrastructure and subscriber data systems.
  • Partner with Engineering leadership to embed security into the product development lifecycle.
  • Lead teams conducting threat modeling, penetration testing, red-teaming, and incident response.
  • Set and communicate security policy to the board and executive team, translating technical risk into business terms and making tradeoffs with speed of execution.
  • Vet and manage relationships with external security vendors, auditors, and researchers, including running a responsible disclosure and bug bounty program.
  • Champion a security-first culture across the company.
  • Resource, mature, and scale the security, IT, and compliance organization.
