About The Position

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) is a world-renowned cancer center dedicated to ending cancer for life through exceptional patient care, cutting-edge research, and superb educational programs. The Division of Supportive and Acute Care Services in the Department of Medicine is seeking an exceptional academic physician and leader to serve as the Chief of the Hospital Medicine Service. This division comprises five services, including Hospital Medicine, Emergency Care, Integrative Medicine and Wellness, Rapid Diagnosis, Early Detection and Risk Reduction (RaDaR), and Supportive Care, all focused on providing whole-person, goal-concordant care across the cancer care continuum. The Hospital Medicine Service has pioneered "oncology hospital medicine" over the last 15 years, with an outstanding team of 47 faculty, including daytime hospitalists and nocturnists. They specialize in delivering comprehensive inpatient medical care 24/7 to adults living with cancer, providing pre-operative risk assessment, and caring for MSK patients transitioning to partner sub-acute care and rehabilitation centers. The service emphasizes compassionate, patient-centered, safe, and evidence-based care. Hospitalists are internal medicine-trained and board-certified, with some holding additional board certification in hospice and palliative medicine. The daytime hospitalists lead inpatient solid tumor teams, caring for patients with complications of cancer-directed therapies, exacerbations of comorbid conditions, and severe symptoms. The nocturnists admit and care for both solid tumor and hematologic malignancy patients overnight, with expertise in communication for serious illness, infectious diseases, pain and symptom management, and complications of novel cancer therapeutics. The service is also home to top-ranked residency programs and plays a key role in clinical innovation, including Point of Care Ultrasound and enterprise-wide leadership in Quality and Safety, Informatics, and Inpatient Operations. The Service Chief will report to the Head of the Division of Supportive and Acute Care Services, overseeing programmatic oversight, faculty recruitment and development, strategic priorities, clinical operations, talent acquisition and retention, research, philanthropy, professional development, mentorship, and teaching. The service collaborates with numerous other departments and services at MSK. MSK's inpatient footprint is set for significant growth, with new facilities and programmatic expansion expected in observation status, transitional care, and readmission reduction. There are numerous opportunities for research in diagnostics, management of novel therapeutics, care delivery innovation, implementation science, and pragmatic trials.

Requirements

Physicians with board certification in internal medicine.
A vision for how the skills and talents of hospitalists and nocturnists can support MSK’s strategic plan in the realms of clinical care, research, and education.
National recognition as a program leader, educator, and/or a funded program of clinical, translational, or population science research in diagnostics, therapeutics, risk assessment, care delivery, implementation science, pragmatic trials, or other relevant content area.
Eligibility for licensure in New York and New Jersey.

Responsibilities

Provide programmatic oversight and responsibility for the Hospital Medicine Service and its faculty.
Support the recruitment and professional development of faculty.
Develop programs that align with MSK’s strategic plan.
Shape the strategic and programmatic priorities for the Service.
Oversee clinical operations, talent acquisition and retention, research, philanthropy, professional development, mentorship, and teaching.
Partner with clinicians and researchers across MSK to investigate new strategies for diagnostics, management of complications of novel therapeutics, and care delivery innovation.
Grow the research portfolio of the service, potentially emphasizing diagnostics and therapeutics, risk assessment, care delivery innovation, implementation science, and pragmatic trials.
