About The Position

A Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in the context of research and graduate medical education (GME) is responsible for overseeing the financial health, strategic planning, and compliance of academic medical centers, research programs, and training initiatives. This role bridges clinical, academic, and administrative functions, ensuring that financial resources are aligned with mission goals in education, research, and patient care.

Requirements

  • Five (5) Years of progressive Leadership in finance.
  • MBA or advanced degree in finance, accounting, or health administration.
  • Expertise in grant accounting, budgeting, financial analysis, and compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement financial strategies to support research funding, faculty appointments, and GME programs.
  • Manage budgets for research grants, training programs, and institutional initiatives, ensuring alignment with strategic priorities.
  • Oversee revenue streams, including grants, contracts, and institutional funding, and ensure compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations.
  • Coordinate with research administration offices to manage grant accounting, compliance, and reporting.
  • Ensure adherence to NIH, NSF, and other funding agency requirements, including cost allocation, indirect cost recovery, and audit readiness.
  • Support the development of financial models for research proposals and infrastructure projects.
  • Manage budgets for residency and fellowship programs, including training site allocations, faculty compensation, and infrastructure costs.
  • Work with Chairs and Executives to address financial and operational issues in training departments.
  • Support accreditation and compliance requirements for GME programs.
  • Serve as a liaison between clinical departments, research centers, and administrative offices on financial matters.
  • Partner with human resources to address faculty compensation, tenure, and promotion processes.
  • Coordinate with investment officers to ensure research and education funds are invested wisely.
  • Prepare regular financial reports for senior leadership, boards, and accreditation bodies.
  • Represent the institution in financial discussions with donors, trustees, and funding agencies.
  • Ensure transparency and accountability in stewardship of research and training funds.
