About The Position

The Baltimore Civic Fund serves as the fiscal sponsor for the City of Baltimore, managing over $20 million annually for more than 100 City programs. The organization aims to connect the City of Baltimore with the philanthropic community, supporting projects in business development, education, culture, and job growth. The Civic Fund ensures that philanthropic investments are managed with integrity and accuracy. The organization is currently undergoing strategic planning to potentially expand its services, which may increase financial complexity. The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) will oversee the organization's finances and business operations, ensuring financial health and sustainability during this growth phase. This role is a key member of the senior management team, reporting directly to the President and CEO, and requires strong leadership, business acumen, and an exemplary work ethic.

Requirements

  • CPA or MBA required
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in financial management, with at least 5 years in a leadership role within a nonprofit or small organization.
  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, tax laws, and financial regulations.
  • Experience with financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting.
  • Proven ability to manage financial reporting and compliance with external audits.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite (experience with Sage Intacct preferred).
  • Passion for the mission and values of the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute financial strategies that support the mission and growth of the organization.
  • Partner with the CEO and Board of Directors to set financial goals and long-term strategic plans.
  • Provide financial insights and recommendations to enhance organizational effectiveness and sustainability.
  • Oversee financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting to ensure resources are aligned with organizational priorities.
  • Prepare and present regular financial reports to the Board of Directors, highlighting key financial metrics, trends, and risks.
  • Ensure the Board and CEO are well-informed on financial performance and potential challenges.
  • Support Board of Directors Investment Committee on management of the Civic Fund’s investment portfolio.
  • Manage day-to-day financial operations, including accounting, payroll, accounts payable/receivable, and cash flow management.
  • Review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports for internal stakeholders and the Board of Directors.
  • Implement and maintain financial controls to ensure compliance with regulations, policies, and best practices.
  • Coordinate the annual audit and tax filing processes, working with external auditors.
  • Oversee the financial aspects of the Civic Fund’s programmatic grants and fundraising activities, ensuring proper budgeting, reporting, and compliance with funder requirements.
  • Ensure the organization complies with all local, state, and federal regulations, as well as internal policies related to financial management.
  • Identify and mitigate financial risks that could impact the organization’s sustainability.
  • Ensure timely and accurate tax filings and compliance with nonprofit financial regulations.
  • Directly manage small finance team.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the Director of Finance and Staff Accountant to foster a high-performance environment and ensure efficient fiscal management and operations.
  • Provide training and support for staff on financial policies and procedures.
