State Street•Boston, MA
•$225,000 - $337,500

About The Position

State Street is seeking an experienced financial executive to serve as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of State Street Investment Management (SSIM). As senior finance leader for a major asset manager, the CFO will shape business strategy, allocate resources, improve earnings quality and strengthen long-term enterprise value. The role reports to both the State Street CFO and the SSIM CEO and co-owns strategy execution, performance and resource allocation. It represents SSIM’s economics independently and credibly while acting in the interests of the wider enterprise, navigating competing priorities and directing decisions about investment, growth, partnerships, acquisitions, repositioning or exits. The CFO advises and constructively challenges SSIM’s CEO and leadership team; translates strategy into multi-year financial plans and operating commitments; and leads budgeting, forecasting, long-range planning and performance management. The role assesses the economics and competitive position of SSIM’s portfolio, establishes transparent product and client economics, supports pricing and commercial decisions, and connects investment performance, flows, fees and profitability to choices about talent, research, data and platforms. The CFO also leads financial governance for operating-model redesign and technology, data, automation and AI modernization; improves finance processes, systems and reporting; maintains strong controls and regulatory, audit and fiduciary compliance across global legal entities; and partners with enterprise functions and governance bodies. The role leads and develops a high-performing global finance organization, builds commercial and analytical capabilities, strengthens succession and fosters an inclusive, accountable culture. The position requires extensive global financial-services leadership and deep investment-management expertise.

Requirements

  • 15+ years of progressive finance leadership experience in large, complex, global financial-services organizations, including significant responsibility for a business or business portfolio.
  • Deep investment-management experience and command of asset-manager economics, including flows, fee yield, product and wrapper economics, distribution models, capacity, market sensitivity and revenue dynamics.
  • Demonstrated impact reallocating resources, improving business mix or economics, challenging underperforming investments and translating strategy into measurable outcomes.
  • Proven record leading major business, operating-model, technology or data transformation with measurable financial and operational results.
  • Deep expertise in strategic finance, FP&A, performance management, expense management and resource allocation.
  • Proven ability to advise and challenge C-suite leaders, influence enterprise decisions without relying on formal authority, and communicate effectively with boards and senior stakeholders.
  • Sound judgment and independence in a highly matrixed, multi-jurisdictional environment with dual reporting and competing business and enterprise priorities.
  • Undergraduate degree.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous service as CFO or senior finance executive of an investment-management business.
  • Experience across a broad product range, such as ETFs, index, active, cash, retirement, solutions and alternatives, and across institutional, intermediary and wealth channels.
  • Direct leadership of M&A, partnerships, integration or business-portfolio restructuring.
  • Experience with technology, data, automation and AI investments and governance that converts them into measurable business value.
  • Familiarity with regulatory, governance, capital and control expectations of a GSIB or other large regulated financial institution.
  • MBA, CPA or CFA.

Responsibilities

  • Advise and constructively challenge the SSIM CEO and leadership team, translating strategy into a multi-year financial framework and clear operating commitments.
  • Co-own enterprise performance and resource allocation, set hurdle rates, arbitrate competing investments and drive corrective action when results or returns fall short.
  • Assess the attractiveness, competitiveness, revenue quality and return profile of SSIM’s business portfolio and recommend where to build, buy, partner, reposition, scale or exit.
  • Represent SSIM’s financial position and priorities to the State Street CFO, SSIM Operating Group and enterprise Finance, balancing business advocacy with enterprise stewardship.
  • Lead financial aspects of partnerships, acquisitions and divestitures, including thesis development, valuation, due diligence, structuring, integration planning and post-investment accountability.
  • Lead budgeting, forecasting, long-range planning and management reporting, with accountability for commitments and timely action on performance gaps.
  • Provide an integrated view of organic growth, market appreciation, gross and net flows, retention, fee yield, mix, margin, operating leverage and market sensitivity.
  • Establish transparent economics across products, wrappers, investment capabilities, client segments, channels and geographies, including cost-to-serve, capacity and scalability.
  • Connect investment performance, flows, pricing and profitability to decisions about talent, research, data, platforms and underperforming or subscale capabilities while preserving investment independence.
  • Drive expense discipline and productivity while protecting differentiated growth investments and improving earnings durability and quality.
  • Provide financial leadership for pricing, fee exceptions and scale thresholds; improve visibility into client lifetime value, mandate profitability, revenue sharing, platform costs, sales productivity and distribution returns.
  • Shape commercial choices across institutional, intermediary, wealth and partnership models, balancing growth, client relevance, economics and execution capacity.
  • Lead financial governance for operating-model redesign and technology, data, automation and AI modernization; establish business-case and portfolio-governance standards, prioritize investments, track benefits, and stop or redirect initiatives that fail to deliver credible outcomes.
  • Ensure modernization improves growth, client outcomes, decision quality, scalability, controls or productivity; modernize finance processes, systems, data and reporting.
  • Maintain strong financial controls, accurate reporting and compliance with regulatory, audit and fiduciary requirements across SSIM’s global legal entities.
  • Partner with Controllership, Treasury, Tax, Risk, Compliance and Legal, with clear ownership, escalation and challenge; support engagement with regulators, boards and governance committees as needed.
  • Lead and develop a high-performing global finance organization; define accountabilities across business finance, planning, controllership and shared enterprise services, and evolve the operating model as needed.
  • Build capabilities in investment-management economics, commercial finance, data and analytics, transformation finance and strategic transactions; create an inclusive, accountable culture, strengthen succession and establish Finance as a source of business leadership.
  • Collaborate across SSIM, enterprise Finance, Technology, Operations, HR and other functions.
