About The Position

The primary function of the Chief Engineer is to direct and coordinate and perform the activities within the hotel in regard to routine, preventative and emergency maintenance. This role is responsible for the maintenance/houseperson staff members and their performance, coordinating with the GM and staff to plan, schedule and prioritize all tasks, work orders and special projects. The Chief Engineer ensures that guests receive prompt, professional treatment and courteous service in response to their maintenance needs, and performs daily inspections to ensure property grounds and work areas are maintained to standard. This position also ensures all safety equipment and conditions are up to code, and that proper lockout/tagout procedures are initiated and followed. The Chief Engineer coordinates with the General Manager to create a preventative maintenance program for all mechanical related equipment, and establishes department equipment and inventory levels to be maintained, working with the General Manager on ordering procedures. They maintain, monitor, and test the hotel’s emergency and security systems, features and procedures, and ensure all tools and equipment are in working condition and up to code, as well as secure. Storerooms and workspaces are to be kept clean and organized. The Chief Engineer coordinates with the GM to ensure that the grounds near the pool, Jacuzzi, sauna, fitness area and restrooms are on par with the standard meant to be maintained, and ensures follow-through on all issues and discrepancies pertaining to Engineering. This role requires proficiency in basic Building Services Engineering, including wall vinyl repairs, tile work, grouting, caulking, plaster, and painting. They maintain the operation for the interior/exterior of the facility, including plumbing, heating & cooling, structural, and ground care. Property walks are completed to ensure cleanliness, functionality and security, and assigned cleaning and maintenance requests are completed as informed by the front desk. The Chief Engineer coordinates the ordering of chemicals and the regular maintenance of the pool and fitness area, and maintains Material Safety Data sheets, ensuring they are up-to-date and compliant with O.S.H.A standards. Assisting in the management of the departmental budget and costs of specific repair projects, and coordinating the maintenance of workout equipment with the General Manager are also key responsibilities. The role involves replying to guest questions and handling concerns, ordering maintenance supplies while observing budgeted guidelines, and conducting Maintenance Department Associate performance appraisals. A monthly checkbook of expenditures is maintained, and all employee trainings and certifications are ensured to be up to date. Setup, maintenance, and refreshing of function rooms as required, and scheduling of Maintenance Associates’ shifts and breaks are also part of the duties. Leadership is demonstrated through positive, professional communication with associates, guests, and vendors. Attendance at mandatory meetings & hotel functions, and compliance with all company standards and policies are required. Other duties as required.

Requirements

  • A High School diploma or equivalent
  • 1 year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with electrical and mechanical systems required.
  • Valid Driver’s License required.
  • Working knowledge of HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing, Carpentry and Painting required.
  • Knowledge of safety codes and tool usage required.

Nice To Haves

  • College degree preferred.
  • Building/Maintenance Certification a plus.
  • Previous hotel experience preferred, but not required.
