About The Position

The Chief Engineer is responsible for managing plant maintenance personnel and ensuring that machinery and support systems operate at maximum efficiency. This role involves overseeing preventive maintenance programs, monitoring adherence to food safety goals through the "Red Tag" program, and maintaining strong working relationships with all departments. The Chief Engineer is also tasked with training and cross-training mechanics in mechanical and electrical repairs, managing project jobs from start to finish, and ensuring compliance with safety, GMPs, security, and PPE policies. Additionally, the position requires administering disciplinary action, isolating repetitive line problems, and communicating pertinent issues and company policies. The Chief Engineer must be available during off shifts for breakdowns and contact during off hours, and will work closely with production line members, department management, leads, and machine operators.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Better than average troubleshooting knowledge of 3 phase 480VAC, control circuits of 110VAC and 24DC, AB PLCs.
  • Able to weld with TIG and stick.
  • Proficient in cutting with torch, band saw, grinder, plasma cutter.
  • Able to fabricate simple guards, covers, catch pans, etc.
  • Knowledge of use: power drills, drill press, mill and lathe machines.
  • Fluent in MS Outlook, MS Excel, MS Word.
  • Good communication and leadership skills.
  • 5 years of experience in a manufacturing setting.
  • 5 years of prior Supervisory/Management experience.
  • Better than average knowledge of maintenance functions such as electrical, electrical controls, PLCs, plumbing, conveyors, motors/gearboxes, read schematics/blueprints.

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
  • Bakery experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Manage plant maintenance personnel.
  • Ensure machinery and support systems operating at maximum efficiency.
  • Oversee preventive maintenance (PM) program and schedule.
  • Oversee the “Red Tag” program to monitor adherence to food safety goals through the maintenance, sanitation and quality verification steps for all maintenance work performed in food safety risk areas.
  • Maintain a good working relationship with all other departments.
  • Oversee training and cross-training of mechanics in performing a wide range of both, mechanical and electrical repairs on a range of equipment.
  • Assist with training efforts as needed.
  • Required to come in during off shifts if needed for breakdowns and must be available to be contacted during off hours.
  • Oversee completion of project jobs from preparing BOM list to completed job.
  • Ensure all mechanics, visitors, contractors, and all other Employees on the assigned shift are following all Company and OSHA rules relating to safety, GMPs, security, and PPE policies and guidelines to keep the plant in compliance.
  • Ensure all mechanics are following all EPA rules and regulations.
  • Administer disciplinary action in accordance with Company policy where needed.
  • Oversee the isolation of repetitive line problems, working with the line leaders, Supervisor and Manager to come to a proper solution.
  • Communicate in a timely manner all pertinent issues.
  • Notify the Quality Assurance Manager of any potential food safety risk.
  • Oversee the scheduling of work for all maintenance personnel on the shift.
  • Communicate and administer all Company policies and procedures consistently.
  • Work as a team supporting and communicating properly with the other members of the production line and maintenance.
  • Interface with all department management, leads and machine operators to determine extent of maintenance assistance.
  • Assist contractors as needed.
  • Work closely with leaders and management.
  • Supervise other mechanics.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
