About The Position

The Chief Engineer assists in the planning, managing and direction of the maintenance work and work force of the Engineering Department to provide safe, comfortable, and reliable facilities for San Diego Theatres’ events, and the City of San Diego. Requirements

  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Suite of tools: Office365 & Microsoft Teams
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to understand instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to solve multiple problems involving varying situations in a fast-paced environment.
  • College degree and 5 years related experience including supervisory experience in safe operation of facility management, preferably in the performing arts, hospitality or other 7/24 service venue operation, and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of federal, state and local laws and codes pertaining to facilities and personnel management.
  • Systems training.
  • Stationary Engineer and refrigerant certifications.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in preparing and monitoring a budget including personnel forecasting, revenue projecting and capital improvements a plus.
  • Professional certifications a plus.
  • Knowledge of facility management and maintenance programs.
  • Working knowledge of CAD programs to create drawings a plus.
  • Knowledge of Project Management Software a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the hiring, training, scheduling and evaluating Engineering personnel.
  • Develop and coach direct reports to ensure the optimal performance and alignment with San Diego Theatres’ service standards.
  • Conduct Safety Meetings, daily staff briefings, maintain training records and prepare necessary reports.
  • As directed by the Engineering Management, provide the direction, oversight, planning and execution of the installation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, electrical infrastructure equipment and general maintenance of the facility.
  • Assist in the operation of the BMS, and the maintenance of the division’s records and storage.
  • Oversee the maintenance of a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Reporting any issues to Engineering Management.
  • As directed by Engineering Management, coordinate with other San Diego Theatres’ departments to provide assistance to clients for utilities and other event related services.
  • Prepare working sketches from blueprints and schematics.
  • As assigned by Engineering Management, assume duties of Project Manager for repair, maintenance, capital improvements, and other projects.
  • Act in compliance with facility and Engineering safety policies and practices and ensure compliance by Engineering staff and outside vendors and contractors.
  • Conduct venue inspections on a regular basis and take immediate corrective action of identified problem areas.
  • Promptly advise Engineering Management of issues, incidents or vulnerabilities that may impact the safety, success or efficiency of San Diego Theatres, employees, clients, users, or the public.
  • Adhere with Collective Bargaining Agreements for represented staff.
  • Supervise the housekeeping duties of all the division areas, including but not limited to the Central Plant, HVAC areas, electrical spaces and all maintenance rooms.
  • Report any issues to Engineering Management.
  • Oversee testing and permitting of all fire safety systems and equipment particular to the Engineering Division.
  • Collaborate with Engineering Management in preparation of department budget forecasts, proposed budgets (30 month outlook) and 10-year Capital improvement projects.
  • Work within the approved budgets to maximize the effectiveness of the operation of the HVAC and MEP systems.
  • Maintains planned maintenance system and inventory of all Engineering Department equipment and supplies.
  • Contact contractors and vendors for proposals and costs for goods and materials.
  • Make recommendations with regards to equipment and material needed.
  • Implement and maintain programs for regular inspections of all building systems, including HVAC, central plants, electrical and other power delivery equipment, boilers, chillers, meters, motors, elevators, cooking equipment, freezers, coolers, and other equipment as needed.
  • Oversee the master access control (keys) to SDT facilities.
  • Providing keys as instructed by SDT employee request.
  • Other duties may be assigned as needed.
