About The Position

The Alberta Public Service works to build a stronger province for current and future generations. The Ministry of Justice helps ensure that all Albertans can live in safe and secure communities while having access to a fair and innovative justice system that is administered according to the law. The Alberta Crown Prosecution Service (ACPS) prosecutes persons charged with Criminal Code, Youth Criminal Justice Act, and provincial statute offences. The ACPS promotes safe communities by vigorously prosecuting cases involving serious and violent crime and working with individuals and organizations in the community to identify and implement improved and alternative approaches to the administration of criminal justice. In addition, the ACPS develops criminal law policy for the province and supports criminal law consultation with other levels of government.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 15+ years of senior assessed legal experience.
  • Minimum of 5+ years in a senior management role.
  • Budget and financial planning experience.
  • Human resources experience.
  • Autonomous, hands-on leader who confidently makes independent decisions, provides clear direction, drives team performance, and delivers results through a practical, vision-led leadership approach.
  • Exceptional issues management, communication and relationship building skills.
  • Demonstrated skills in system thinking, strategic business planning, and resource management.
  • A law degree.
  • Membership in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta.
  • Thorough understanding of relevant legislation.
  • Working understanding of project management and change management practices and principles.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership and ensure the branch remains aligned with ministry and government key strategies and outcomes.
  • Provide direction and leadership on all matters relating to the administration of criminal justice according to the law in regional areas including Medicine Hat, Lethbridge, Calgary, Red Deer, Wetaskiwin and Hinton.
  • Ensure adequate professional and support staffing, employee relations, performance management, administration of discretionary rewards and benefits, and staff development of the Southern Regional Crown Prosecution Offices.
  • Lead and mentor a team of senior prosecutors and promote standardized application of policy and legislation.
  • Make innovative recommendations that will influence changes to policies and procedures impacting department initiatives.
  • Foster a collaborative approach to the investigation and prosecution of criminal cases.
  • Build linkages across government, with police and other stakeholders.
  • Act as a liaison and ensure there is integration of systems with police and investigative agencies, the courts, other divisions within Alberta Justice, other departments of the Government of Alberta, and community groups and agencies.
  • Participate in law reform activities, providing legal advice, communication support and strategy.
  • Contribute as a member of the senior management team and provide sound advice to the Assistant Deputy Minister (ADM).
