About The Position

At Leavenworth Public Schools, effective communication is vital to our purpose of supporting and enhancing the learning environment for all students. The CCO will be responsible for developing and executing comprehensive communication plans that ensure transparency, foster engagement with all stakeholders, and promote the district’s accomplishments, vision, and values. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field required
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in a communications or public relations role
  • At least 3 years in a leadership or management capacity
  • Proven experience in crisis communication, media relations, and digital communication strategies
  • Strong writing, editing, and presentation skills, with the ability to craft clear and compelling messages for a variety of audiences
  • Knowledge of social media platforms, web content management, and communication technology tools
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with district stakeholders at every level
  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, often requiring long hours or quick turnaround on communications during high-demand situations.
  • Must be able to work in varied environments, including outdoor settings, as needed for public engagement or event participation.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Experience working in an educational setting or with school districts is preferred but not required

Responsibilities

  • Lead the district’s overall communication strategy, including internal and external communication efforts.
  • Work closely with the Superintendent and other senior district leaders to develop and implement a proactive, clear, and consistent district-wide communications plan aligned with the district’s mission and goals.
  • Serve as the primary spokesperson for the district, managing media relations and public information strategies to communicate key district functions such as student achievement, financial resources, and growth management.
  • Ensure the district’s messaging is clear, consistent, and impactful across all media platforms.
  • Oversee crisis communication efforts, ensuring timely and accurate dissemination of information during emergencies or significant events.
  • Develop and execute communication strategies to manage both internal and external stakeholder concerns and minimize disruption during crises.
  • Enhance relationships with parents, students, staff, and the broader community.
  • Facilitate communication between the district, community leaders, and elected officials, ensuring a transparent and effective exchange of information.
  • Organize events, meetings, and campaigns that foster engagement, awareness, and support for the district’s initiatives.
  • Manage the district’s online presence, including website content, social media platforms, and email communications.
  • Ensure that all digital communication is timely, relevant, and aligned with the district’s branding and communication standards.
  • Establish and maintain effective internal communication systems to keep district staff and faculty informed about important updates, policies, and initiatives.
  • Act as a subject matter expert, providing coaching and support to leadership teams in implementing communication strategies at all organizational levels.
  • Ensure consistent and professional district branding across all communication channels, including newsletters, websites, social media, and other public-facing materials.
  • Promote and safeguard the district’s image and reputation through well-executed messaging.
  • Serve on the Superintendent’s Cabinet and participate in district-wide decision-making.
  • Represent the district at local, regional, and state meetings on matters related to learning services.
  • Perform additional tasks as requested by the Superintendent or other senior administrators related to district communications and public relations.
