Chief Antenna Design Engineer

L3Harris•Rockwall, TX
•Onsite

About The Position

L3Harris is seeking a Chief Antenna Design Engineer to serve as a technical subject matter expert in the design of ultrawideband antenna and electronically scanned array (ESA) systems across multiple lifecycle phases for the Advanced Aperture Solutions (AAS) group. The role supports diverse antenna development projects as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team, spanning project execution and research and development. AAS is based in Rockwall, Texas, and develops high-gain antenna systems for military airborne, maritime, and ground platforms to support ISR capabilities in the SIGINT operating environment. The engineer will develop state-of-the-art antenna designs, help ensure systems meet or exceed customer requirements, support proposals and business development, mentor junior engineers, and lead timely program execution. The position also serves as a technical authority and customer point of contact on complex antenna and RF/microwave programs. The group uses design and analysis tools including CST Design Studio, circuit board design software, MATLAB, SolidWorks, and a PCB laser for rapid design iterations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical, or systems engineering with 12 years of prior relevant experience; alternatively, a graduate degree with a minimum of 10 years of prior related experience; or, in lieu of a degree, a minimum of 16 years of prior related experience.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Security Clearance.
  • Experience designing and analyzing antenna performance, including gain, bandwidth, polarization, directivity, and efficiency.
  • Experience with RF link budgets and cascade analysis, including gain, noise figure, linearity, and noise power; S-parameters; matching networks; and filtering.
  • Antenna design experience in the RF spectrum, including VHF, UHF, and microwave applications in the L, S, C, X, Ku, Ka, and V bands.
  • Experience designing antenna elements such as horns, dipoles, patch antennas, PIFAs, loop, slot, helical, fractal, Vivaldi, biconical, log-periodic, and Yagi antennas.
  • Experience with antenna simulation and analysis tools, including CST, HFSS, SystemVue, Advanced Design System (ADS), MATLAB, and other ECAD design tools.

Nice To Haves

  • Phased array design experience.
  • Antenna range measurement experience using planar near-field scanners, spherical near-field scanners, compact ranges, or far-field ranges.
  • Advanced use of antenna and RF laboratory equipment such as vector network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, noise figure meters, and power sensors.
  • Understanding of programming languages such as MATLAB, C/C++, LabVIEW, Qt, or Python.
  • Experience with wiring and block diagrams, mechanical drawings, and PCB schematic and layout drawings.
  • Familiarity with direction-finding systems and digital beamforming.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as technical authority for complex antenna and RF/microwave development programs, including research, detailed design, and analysis for airborne, maritime, and ground systems.
  • Guide the execution of technical design review briefings.
  • Assess and report technical project status, risks, and issues.
  • Mentor and guide junior engineers in antenna development to ensure designs meet customer requirements.
  • Lead business development activities, including planning, customer visits, technical briefings, and customer demonstrations.
  • Generate accurate estimates for non-recurring engineering (NRE) and recurring costs.
  • Serve as the main technical point of contact with customers on technical and contractual matters, supporting customer satisfaction and business growth.
  • Support proposal efforts to generate new business and lead timely program execution.
